Former Clemson player, Beaufort high assistant named football coach at Battery Creek
Battery Creek tabbed Beaufort assistant Terrance Ashe to be the school’s new football coach.
The school made the announcement on Friday. Ashe replaces Walt Wilson, who went 9-21 in the past three seasons for the Dolphins. Wilson was hired at C.A. Johnson last month.
This will be Ashe’s first head coaching job in football. Ashe was the receivers coach and co-offensive coordinator last season at Beaufort. The Eagles won the Region 6-4A championship last season.
“I had great conversations with principal Chad Cox and AD Sarah Hayes, about the vision they had for the school, athletics and community,” Ashe said. “The vision and goals that were expressed align with my personal beliefs and goals I would want to share as a coach. I felt like all the pieces to the puzzle had fallen into place and that this was an opportunity I could not pass up.”
Ashe said he spoke with the players via Zoom conference call and outlined his vision for the program. Battery Creek went 3-6 this season and lost to Strom Thurmond in the first round of the playoffs. The Dolphins’ last winning season came in 2012.
“I told them that you first have to decide to be successful and then you must expect to be successful. We understand that it’s not going to be easy but life is not easy,” Ashe said. We are going to take it one day at a time and embrace the journey. Our players will understand the importance of discipline. We will conduct ourselves with class and dignity, both on and off the field, and that starts with having a genuine appreciation for one another.
“Ultimately, we will shape young boys into selfless men who see the importance of serving others and using their talents, athletic or otherwise, for the benefit of those around them.”
Before Beaufort, Ashe coached six seasons at River Bluff High School in Lexington. Some of his duties at River Bluff included offensive coordinator, JV head coach and head softball coach.
Ashe was a football and baseball standout at Cheraw High School and graduated in 2005. He walked on to the football team at Clemson and eventually earned a scholarship. The Tigers won ACC Division title in 2009 in Ashe’s senior season.
Ashe played 47 games at Clemson and caught 22 passes for 239 yards. He also played special teams and 37 tackles.
