Battery Creek RB undergoes surgery stemming from auto accident
Battery Creek’s Jelani Boyd underwent more than five hours of surgery late Tuesday, his coach said, to repair facial injuries suffered in last week’s violent auto accident that left two teammates with lesser injuries.
Boyd remains at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, said coach Fred Hamilton, where the running back is expected to remain until at least the weekend.
Boyd and teammates Ahman Smalls and Fred DeLoach were riding together last Thursday when their vehicle collided with a pickup less than three miles from campus. A news release said Ojars Jurjans, 79, of Beaufort appeared to have failed to yield the right of way before making a left turn.
Smalls went home Friday from Beaufort Memorial Hospital after being treated for a cut on his head, though Hamilton said Wednesday that doctors since have discovered a deep bruise on his spleen. DeLoach required knee surgery to repair a torn tendon and torn meniscus.
