Five area basketball players — four boys and one girl — were named Wednesday to the S.C. Basketball Coaches Association’s All-State teams.

The boys honored were Bluffton sophomore Jermaine Patterson, Beaufort junior Matt Garay, Battery Creek senior Markell Smalls and Ridgeland-Hardeeville senior Trenard Ferrell.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville senior Ny’Jae Boozer was the area girl honored.

Beaufort’s Garay was the biggest surprise. After averaging three points and three rebounds a year ago, he exploded this season, averaging 17.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.

“He has exceded our expectations,” Beaufort head coach Nate Livesay said of the Region 8-AAA Player of the Year.

On Tuesday, Garay scored 16 leading the Eagles to their firts postseason win since 2014.

“He posted his biggest numbers earlier (in the season) when other guys were figuring out their roles and we needed him to be our go-to-guy,” Livesay said. “Now he’s drawing so much attention, that it creates opportunities for others.”

Patterson is an all-around player, even as a sophomore. The 5-foot-9 point guard averages 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.7 steals a game.

Ferrell is the top player on the No. 1 Class 2-A team in the state. One of the Jaguars’ top shooters, he also plays the role of de facto big man, averaging 14.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

Smalls is one of Antoine Youmans’ stable of senior guards. The Dolphins’ leader averages 11.4 points, 5.4 assists and 5.3 rebounds a game.

Boozer, the Region 5-AA Player of the Year, is the top-scorer on the third-ranked Jaguars. She scored 26 in Ridgeland-Hardeeville’s 85-14 playoff-opening rout of Academic Magnet.
