High school roundup, Feb. 17: Ridgeland-Hardeeville, Battery Creek, Whale Branch open playoffs with victories

No. 3-ranked Ridgeland-Hardeeville rolled over Academic Magnet 85-14 at home to open the Class 2-A girls basketball playoffs on Tuesday night.

The Jaguars (19-2) are the top seed from Region 5-AA, while Academic Magnet (4-13) was the fourth seed from Region 6-AA.

Ny’Jae Boozer led Ridgeland-Hardeeville with 26 points, while Jayme Chisholm added 18 points and Quanajia Drayton scored 13.

Battery Creek 70, Edisto 44: Three Dolphins scored in double figures in the first round of the Class 2-A playoffs.

Battery Creek’s leading scorers Brianna Tolbert and Taquasia Lampkin with 22 points apiece, and Kendrianna Shojgreen with 15 points.

Whale Branch 38, Wade Hampton 31: Jonae Riley scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Warriors won a Class 2-A playoff game on the road.

Nichole Smalls added six points and five assists.

Hilton Head Christian 46, Thomas Heyward Academy 32: The Eagles finished the regular season by claiming the region crown.

Zi Doe led the way with 26 points, and Brielle McCarthy added nine.

Beaufort Academy 56, Charleston Collegiate 33: BA (9-12, 3-7) finished with three players in double figures and played dominating defense at John’s Island.

Eagle Amelia Huebel led all scorers with 16 points, followed by Sissy Mungin with 13 points and Mary Keane with 10.

Allison Suber added nine points and nine rebounds for BA.

The team was also celebrated the first points of the season by Swiss exchange student Joelle Zing.

“I think not a lot of Swiss people can say they played high school basketball,” Zing said. “At my first game I was so nervous but I think that was normal. I am so glad that I decided to play.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hilton Head Christian 59, Thomas Heyward Academy 31: The Eagles (12-12, 9-5) finish their regular season with a win.

Hilton Head Christian’s Jamareon Clark led all scores with 19 points and six assists. Cole Webster added 10 points and seven rebounds, and RJ Bartolomucci added nine points and six rebounds.

Blake Bannon led the Rebels with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.
