High school roundup, Feb. 14: Beaufort girls open 3-A playoffs Monday on road

Beaufort High School’s return to relevance in girls basketball continues Monday when the Eagles play at Midland Valley at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Class 3-A playoffs.

The Eagles, led by junior guard/forward Imari Smalls (12.5 points per game) and junior guard Naijuia Moyd (9.8 points), finished the season 17-7, 5-5 in 8-AAA, good enough for the third seed from the region.

Coming into the year, there was little reason to expect much from the Eagles.

Beaufort was 4-19 overall and 0-10 in Region 8-AAA last season, ending the season on a 13-game losing streak. The Eagles also were 4-19 and 0-10 in region play — at the Class 4-A level — two seasons ago in Reggie Jones’ first season as head coach.

They were 1-22 overall and 0-10 in their region three seasons ago.

When the Eagles upset No. 8 Stall in January, they snapped a 32-game losing streak in conference play.

“The ladies just put in hard work all summer long,” Jones said after the win over Stall. “We just started believing in each other, and that’s what did it for us to turn it around.

“We’re not quite there yet, but we’re on our way.”
