The Battery Creek boys basketball team knocked off Academic Magnet 66-53 on Friday night at Whale Branch Early College High School to win the Region 6-AA title and a No. 1 seed in the Class 2-A playoffs.
“Back-to-back region championships kind of speaks for itself,” Dolphins head coach Antoine Youmans said. “The boys came out playing hard knowing that we wanted to gain some momentum going into the playoffs.”
Battery Creek got off to a quick start in the first half holding Academic Magnet, who couldn't seem to miss a shot in pregame warmups, to only 19 points.
Quick transitions and good rebounding by the Dolphins frustrated the Raptors.
But the second half brought an Academic Magnet team that seemed rejuvenated.
Hustle kept the Raptors in the game until late and even gave them the lead for a brief time. But in the end, Battery Creek’s speed was too much.
Trevin Simmons, who hit 5 of 8 3-pointers, led the Dolphins with 17 points, while Isaiah Mayes scored 16.
“Academic Magnet is a good team, they shoot well and they were ranked in the top 10 coming into tonight,” Youmans said. “We knew we would have to work hard for this win and I think it will help our momentum moving forward."
The Dolphins will host a first-round playoff game against the No. 4 seed from Region 5-AA at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is $6.
