Playoff roundup: Five Lowcountry girls teams advance to next round of postseason

Three-time defending champion Hilton Head Christian started the SCISA 2A playoffs with a 73-21 win over Williamsburg Academy on Friday night at the Sumter Civic Center.

The Eagles will play Greenwood Christian, which defeated Northside, in the second round at Sumter Civic Center on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Four HHCA players scored in double figures, led by Abby Peduzzi’s 18 points. Tamya Hutchinson scored 15 followed by Jaida Grayson and Skylar Smith’s 12.

The 71 points were the second-highest total of the season, behind the 86 scored against Beaufort Academy on Jan. 7.

South Florence Florence 83, Hilton Head Island 52

Abby Wilson scored 33 points as South Florence eliminated Hilton Head Island from the SCHSL Class 4A girls playoffs.

South Florence will play Aiken in the third round on Wednesday.

Hilton Head trailed 33-27 at halftime but the Bruins began the third quarter on a 14-2 run to put the game away.

Gianna Timko led HHI with 24 points and Lynda Young scored 18.

Hilton Head Prep 58, Pinewood Prep 28

Courtney Campbell scored 22 points as the Dolphins won their first-round SCISA 3A playoff game. The game was played at Cathedral Academy.

Katie Campbell chipped in with 11 for HHP, which will play defending state champion Cardinal Newman at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Sumter Civic Center.

Beaufort Academy 57, Spartanburg Day 48

Mike’Ala Washington had a game-high 31 points in Beaufort Academy’s win in the first round of the SCISA 2A playoffs.

The Eagles will play top-seeded Pee Dee Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Sumter Civic Center.

Tahleea Heyward added 17 points for Beaufort Academy.

John Paul II 37, Shannon Forest 31

Cayce Graves and Brady Mahoney combined for 28 of John Paul II’s 28 points in the first-round win in the SCISA 2A playoffs.

The Warriors play Orangeburg Prep, 55-23 winners over Carolina Academy in the second round at 8 p.m. Monday in Sumter.

Whale Branch 67, Estill 46

Kynew Barnwell had her second 30-point game in the playoffs as the eighth-ranked Warriors moved on to the third round of the SCHSL Class A playoffs.

Whale Branch travels to defending state champion Military Magnet on Monday in the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Military Magnet won both matchups with the last on Feb. 7, 48-26.

Andrew Jackson 64, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 35

Tamia Watkins led three Andrew Jackson players in double figures with 23 points as the Volunteers defeated the Jaguars in the second round of the SCHSL Class 2A girls playoffs.

Thursday’s Playoff Results

Beaufort 57, North Myrtle Beach 48

Coming off a strong season and Region 7-4A title, the Beaufort boys basketball team started its postseason with a win Thursday night.

The Eagles defeated North Myrtle Beach in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. Beaufort (14-5) will host West Florence in the second round on Saturday at 6 p.m. Results weren’t available at press time.

Beaufort outscored the Chiefs, 11-4, over the final 2:13 to season the win.

Three Beaufort players had double-doubles in the win. Michael Dennison had 14 points and 20 rebounds, Zyrin Odom had 14 points and 10 rebounds. James Dennison had 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Anderson Jones had 9 points.

Hartsville 54, Hilton Head Island 50 (OT)

After a magical run to the Class 4A championship last season, Hilton Head is out in the first round this year.

Tristan LeXander scored 17 points while Jamari Briggs and DeAndre Huggins each had 16 to lead the Red Foxes past the Seahawks in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

South Aiken 52, May River 49

South Aiken rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat the Sharks in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

May River’s season ends at 12-10. The Sharks led 32-22 at halftime.

Delwin Hodge led South Aiken with 21 points and KJ Jenkins had 13.

Whale Branch 54, Hemingway 49

The Warriors advanced in the Class A playoffs with a win over the Tigers. Whale Branch heads to Hannah-Pamplico on Saturday.

Johnsonville 73, Bridges Prep 51

Bridges Prep lost in its playoff debut to Johnsonville.

Jordan Williams led Johnsonville with 24 points and Jace Avant had 13.

Girls Basketball

Crestwood 52, Battery Creek 31

The Eagles’ season ended with a first-round playoff loss to Crestwood.
