Seahawk Holiday Basketball Classic canceled over COVID-19 concerns
The Seahawk Holiday Basketball Classic has been canceled, tournament officials announced Monday.
Officials made the announcement on the tournament’s Twitter page.
“The 2020 Seahawk Holiday Classic has been cancelled. Due to the unknowns of our school district and many teams participating no longer allowed to travel overnight/out of state we feel we cannot run a quality and safe tournament for all to enjoy this year,” a statement on Seahawk Classic’s Twitter page.
The Classic was going to be in its 34th year and features 16 boys and 16 girls teams from across the country. The tournament is held at two different locations Hilton High School and the Island Rec Center.
The status of high school sports is up in the air across SC and the rest of the country because of COVID-19. The South Carolina High School League approved a plan last week to allow for fall sports, including football.
Beaufort County teams haven’t held summer workouts because of the coronavirus but fall sports can begin practice on Aug. 17.
Official practice dates for fall sports vary. Girls golf, swimming and tennis can begin on Aug. 17 while cross country and volleyball start Aug. 24. Football and competitive cheer start on Sept. 8.
The start of winter and spring sports will be announced at a later date.
