Lowcountry players earn all-state basketball honors. Area teams moving on in postseason

Five Lowcountry basketball players earned statewide honors as SC Basketball Coaches Association released its all-state teams and players of the year Wednesday.

Whale Branch senior and Wofford signee Nick Pringle was named to the Class 2A boys team and Ridgeland-Hardeeville was named to the 3A boys squad.

On the girls side, Bluffton’s Tatyana Aiken made the 4A team while May River’s Emma Peluso was on 3A team and Whale Branch Zhani Thompson on the 2A team.

SCISA teams get playoff opponents

The SCISA high school basketball playoff brackets were released Wednesday.

Boys playoffs begin Friday and girls on Saturday at neutral sites. The championships will be held Feb. 29 at Sumter Civic Center.

In Class 2A boys, Hilton Head Prep faces Shannon Forest on Friday at 5 p.m. in Sumter. John Paul II takes on Christian Academy on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Pinewood Prep. Hilton Head Christian plays Spartanburg Day on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Heathwood Hall.

In Class A boys, Beaufort Academy plays Holly Hill Academy on Friday at 8 p.m. at Pinewood Prep.

In 2A girls, top-seeded Hilton Head Christian plays Dillon Christian at noon Saturday at Heathwood. Hilton Head Prep faces Marlboro Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Sumter. John Paul II takes on The King’s Academy on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Porter-Gaud.

Top-seeded Beaufort Academy girls play Anderson Christian on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Wilson Hall.

Boys Basketball

May River 58, Strom Thurmond 51

Jimmie Green scored 13 points and Brady Harrell had 11 as May River knocked off Strom Thurmond on the road in the first round of the 3A playoffs Wednesday.

The Sharks travel to second-ranked Bishop England on Friday.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville 88, Swansea 44

Shaleaf Cherry led four Jaguar players in double figures in the first round win of the 3A playoffs Tuesday.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville hosts Manning on Friday in a second-round game.

Brandon Howard and Rashard Baker each had 16 and Mauriq Singleton had 10 for the Jags.

Hilton Head Prep 69, Hilton Head Christian 45

The Dolphins used a 25-8 run to start the game and picked up their 20th victory of the season.

Tyrone Calloway led the Dolphins with 16 points. Stone McDonald scored 15, Luke Foley had 14 and Kane Eanes had 10 points.

John Paul II 54, Thomas Heyward 44

Jermiah Young scored 16 points and the Warriors won their regular-season finale.

Reco Anderson and Jackson Ogden chipped in with 10 points each.

Beaufort Academy 48, Bethesda Academy 47

Elijah Fess scored 18 points and Dawson Coleman had 13 in the Eagles’ win over region champ Bethesda.

Girls Basketball

Bluffton 49, Darlington 27

Bluffton used an 18-7 first quarter to defeat Darlington in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Bluffton hosts North Myrtle Beach on Friday in the second round. Tacoya Heyward led the Bobcats with 21 points.

Whale Branch 51, Mullins 47

Whale Branch overcame a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to win its first round game in the Class 2A playoffs.

The Warriors trailed 29-20 going in the fourth. Kynew Barnwell scored 18 points and Zhani Thompson had 17 to lead Whale Branch.

Airport 50, Beaufort 27

Airport jumped out a 30-9 lead to defeat Beaufort in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Caleigh Corbitt led Airport with 14 points and Jayla Jamison had 12.

Layla Warren led Beaufort with 14 points.

Hilton Head Christian 45, Hilton Head Prep 22

Jasmine Campbell scored 20 points and Eagles moved to 26-2 on the season, winning all 10 region games.

John Paul II 56, Thomas Heyward 24

Tkai Devore had a triple-double and the Warriors got a big win on Senior Night on Tuesday.

Devore finished with 20 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals. Bella Termini added 11 points. Jasmine Hamilton had eight points and five rebounds.

Beaufort Academy 54, Ashley Hall 32

Beaufort Academy moved to 18-3 on the season with a win Tuesday.

Mike’Ala Washington led the Eagles with 20 points. EmilyAnn Hiers had 10 and Amelia Huebel nine.
