May River girls roll in playoff opener, Region 7-4A girls team announced
The May River girls basketball team began the playoffs in a big way Monday night against Pelion.
The Sharks used a 23-3 second quarter to defeat Pelion, 70-22, in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs on Monday. May River hosts Dillon in a second-round game Thursday at 7 p.m.
Gracyn Drury, Jordan Bigham and Chynna Sneed each had 11 points for the Sharks. Ten different May River players scored in the game.
Strom Thurmond 59, Battery Creek 43
Talayah Hamilton scored 24 points as Strom Thurmond defeated Battery Creek in the first round of the 3A playoffs.
Deondra Jones added 12 points for the Rebels. Nanotchka Singleton and Kiara Wilson each had seven points to lead Battery Creek.
Lowcountry teams in final SCBCA polls
Three Lowcountry basketball teams were ranked in the final regular season SC Basketball Coaches Polls, released Tuesday.
Whale Branch boys are ranked No. 3 in Class 2A while Ridgeland-Hardeeville is No. 9 in Class 3A boys. The Bluffton girls are ranked No. 7 in 4A and May River girls 10th in 3A.
All Region 7-4A girls basketball team
Region champion Bluffton placed three on the Region 4-7A girls basketball team.
The Bobcats’ Tatyana Aiken, Tacoya Heyward and Samari Mitchell were selected to the team. Aiken was named the region player of the year. Bluffton’s Lonnie Roberts was named Coach of the Year.
Rest of the all-region team was Beaufort’s Layla Warren and Sequoia Smalls, Hilton Head’s Miley Ray and Janiya Ferebee, Colleton County’s Omari Kirkland and Ashley Savage.
