Ridgeland-Hardeeville boys, Bluffton and May River girls win regular-season finales
Ridgeland-Hardeeville capped off a perfect region record with an 86-75 win over Lake Marion on Tuesday in boys basketball action.
The Jags outscored the Gators, 32-9, in the first quarter and never looked back. Mauriq Singleton led R-H with 20 points and eight rebounds. Shaleaf Cherry and Kasim Scott each added 13 for the Jags.
Bluffton 67, Beaufort 59
Bluffton used an 18-7 fourth quarter to defeat the Eagles.
Lee Kirkland led Bluffton with 22 points. Tyler Rice had 15.
Zyrin Odom led Beaufort with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Oliver Holmes had 15 points, Rush Riley had 9, and Josh Aiken had 8 points. The Eagles shot just eight percent in the final quarter.
Colleton County 72, Hilton Head Island 65
Colleton opened the game on a 16-4 run to claim its second straight Region 7-4A title.
Alex Smith and Sam Summa led HHI with 18 points each.
John Paul 48, Hilton Head Christian 41
Jackson Ogden scored 16 points and Reco Anderson had 14 in the Warriors’ win over the Eagles.
JP II held HHCA’s Floyd Hargrove to just nine points. The Warriors led 26-16 at halftime before HHCA cut it to within three in the fourth quarter.
Jace Blackshear led HHCA with 11 points.
Bethesda 55, Hilton Head Prep 54
The Dolphins suffered a tough home loss and moved to 18-6 overall, 8-2 in the region.
Tyrone Calloway led the Dolphins with 21 points; Luke Foley scored 14 and Stone McDonald led the team in rebounding.
HHCA plays Pinewood Prep on Friday and ends the regular season next Tuesday vs HHCA.
Girls Basketball
Bluffton 55, Beaufort 30
The Bobcats outscored the Eagles, 21-1, to wrap up region play unbeaten.
Bluffton is 20-3 overall and 6-0 in Region 7-4A. The Bobcats host a first-round playoff game Tuesday.
Tacoya Heyward led Bluffton with 17 and Tatyana Aiken had 13
May River 55, Wade Hampton 38
Gracyn Drury scored 13 points and Chynna Sneed had 11 as May River closed out its regular season with a win.
The Sharks host a first-round game Monday.
Colleton County 7, Hilton Head Island 2
Hilton Head Island needed a strong defensive effort to keep its playoff hopes alive but it still wasn’t enough Tuesday night.
The Seahawks needed to hold Colleton to 26 points or less and was able to do that by playing slow-down tempo. But HHI couldn’t make the shots it needed and didn’t score a basket until the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks trailed 3-2 with less than two minutes left but CC had a couple of late baskets.
“The outcome was disappointing but we met as a met and presented the scenarios. We played to make the playoffs and our best path was to make the game unwatchable,” HHI coach Sean Rochester said in an email. “I credit our kids for taking a game plan from practice and executing it in a game tonight. Some people won’t like it but my job is to put our kids in the best position to win and advance.”
Hilton Head Christian 61, John Paul II 28
Jasmine Campbell scored 17 points while Dior Shelton and Mary Yanker each had 13 in the defending champions win over the Warriors.
Tkai DeVore had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals to lead John Paul II.
Wrestling
May River, Beaufort seasons end
Beaufort and May River saw its season end in the playoffs Monday.
North Myrtle Beach defeated Beaufort, 42-31, in the third round of the 4A playoffs while Gilbert edged May River, 39-33, in the 3A playoffs.
