Lowcountry roundup: Ridgeland-Hardeeville girls headed to lower state championship

The Ridgeland-Hardeeville girls did something not many teams have done recently – beat Bishop England in the playoffs.

Led by Que Drayton’s 30 points, the Jaguars defeated the defending champion Bishop England, 66-41, on Monday in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs. Ridgeland-Hardeeville advances to the Class 3A Lower State championship game Saturday and will face Swansea at 3 p.m. at the Florence Civic Center.

The loss ends the Bishops’ postseason run. Bishop England had played in six straight state title games, winning four of them.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville, which lost to Bishop England in two of last years in the playoffs, turned in a dominating performance. The Jaguars used a 14-4 run to take a 24-6 lead. After the Bishops cut it to eight, R-H answered with a 3-pointer and weren’t challenged from there.

The Jags’ Jamee Mack scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers while Marlaysia Westbrook had 10.

Beaufort Academy 63, Richard Winn 37

Karolina Struharova led three players in double figures with 22 points as in BA won its second round game in the SCISA Class A playoffs at Wilson Hall in Sumter.

The Eagles play Patrick Henry in the semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Wilson Hall.

Amelia Huebel added 14 points, and Emily Ann Hiers scored 13 for Beaufort Academy.

Trinity-Byrnes 46, Hilton Head Christian 20

Trinity-Byrnes jumped out to a 13-0 lead on its way to a win in the second round of the SCISA 2A playoffs.

Hilton Head Christian finishes at 20-2.

Palmetto Christian 58, John Paul II 48

Palmetto Christian used an 10-2 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for win in the second round of the SCISA 2A playoffs.

The loss ends the Warriors’ season at 22-6, a 15-win improvement over last season. ‘

Tkai Devore finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Abby Quinty and Abigail Barker both added 11 points. Jasmine Hamilton had 8 points and Mary Foster Gaillard had 4.

Quinty got John Paul II within 43-39 with five minutes left on a runner in the lane. But Trinity-Byrnes took control from there.

Jon Boan scored five goals and four assists, and Braydon Sokolowski had three goals times and four assists.
