Beaufort’s Daniel, Bluffton’s Riley earn all-state tennis accolades
Beaufort High's McKenzie Daniel and Bluffton’s Rachel Riley earned All-State tennis honors at this week's High School League girls’ singles championships in Cayce, with Daniel placing sixth in the Class 5A-4A division and Riley reaching the consolation semifinals at Class 3A-2A-1A.
Daniel, an eighth-grader and Region 8-4A champion, lost her opening match to eventual champion Maggie Cubit of Spartanburg but rebounded with five straight wins, including a victory over sixth seed Corbin Dorsey (TL Hanna) to reach the consolation final. Her run ended there, though, with Fort Mill's Elizabeth Fitzgerald prevailing 8-2.
Riley also bounced back from an opening setback to work her way through the 3A-2A-1A consolation bracket. Though a loss to Southside’s Cathy Chi stopped her short of the consolation final, Riley made Bobcats history as their first All-State tennis player since the school opened in 2004.
Hilton Head Island's Sarah Wood and Holly Kerr, who led the Seahawks to the Class 4A Lower State title and state runner-up finish, both ran out of steam in the individual brackets with two consecutive losses.
