Rebels’ Madison Cooler named volleyball’s top player in SCISA region
Thomas Heyward’s Madison Cooler was a unanimous choice as Player of the Year, while Hilton Head Christian’s Sydney DeSimone and John Paul II’s Abigail Barker also were unanimous selections to the all-region volleyball team in SCISA 2A.
Cooler, a senior outside hitter, amassed 424 kills — nearly 17 per match —in powering the Rebels to a 22-3 record and a run to the quarterfinals of the SCISA 2A tournament. She also totaled 233 digs on the season, along with 120 service aces.
DeSimone totaled 329 kills and 512 digs in leading Hilton Head Christian to the state tournament, while Barker had 143 kills and 447 digs for John Paul II.
Thomas Heyward and Hilton Head Christian also had three other selections to the all-region team, as area schools filled 10 of the 14 slots.

Eagles place 3 on girls all-region: Callie Haertel led a trio of Hilton Head Christian girls on the all-region cross country teams, while Hilton Head Prep and John Paul II had two boys’ selections apiece.
