Hilton Head Christian, Bluffton among elite teeing up at Cat Island
Hilton Head Christian, last year’s SCISA girls’ champion, is among three reigning state titleholders who headline the field for the fifth annual High School Invitational this weekend at The Sanctuary at Cat Island.
St. James, which captured the Class 3A crown last fall at Port Royal’s Barony layout, and reigning Class 2A champion Bishop England also are among eight schools that finished among the top three in their respective divisions a year ago.
The lineup also features 20 of the top 25 girls in the South Carolina junior rankings, including top-ranked Kathleen Sumner (Bishop England) and eight others among the top 10. Hilton Head Christian senior Anna Eddy is ranked 18th, with Bluffton freshman Sophia Burnett at No. 20.
Bluffton, which also features Burnett’s younger sister Camila, also will tee it up among the 15 participating teams Saturday and Sunday. May River junior Kathryn Thorne was invited to compete as an individual.
Competition begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday with a shotgun start. Wando is the defending team champion, holding off St. James last year by one stroke.
