May River loses cross country coach, fills 2 other vacancies

Though May River High won’t open its doors for another three weeks, the Sharks have found themselves back in the market for a cross-country coach.

Brian Ryman, one of a handful of coaches moving from Bluffton High, instead will remain at BHS after being hired last month as an assistant principal. That left May River athletics director Brett Macy going back through his stack of résumés.

“We knew (Ryman) was interested in becoming an assistant principal,” Macy said. “We support him and can’t fault him for that.”

Macy said he has interviewed “a couple” of candidates and will recommend a hire shortly. Ditto for tennis, the other fall sport still without a coach.

“I didn’t want to get just any coach,” Macy said. “I want coaches who understand each individual sport and will do a good job coaching them, not someone to just make out the schedules. We’ve been as patient as we could, and I think we’ve gotten quality coaches to fit our May River model.”

The Sharks have filled two more positions since a hiring flurry in May, appointing Tom Dyer to coach boys’ lacrosse and Misael Garzon for boys’ soccer.

Dyer previously coached at Westwood High, joining Rodney Summers (football) and Ashley Powell (wrestling) as the third Redhawks coach to migrate from the Blythewood school. In addition to overseeing Westwood lacrosse’s launch this spring, he has been a football assistant under Summers.

Garzon was Beaufort High’s junior varsity coach for three years, also coaches the U18s at Storm Soccer Academy.

Along with with the cross-country and tennis vacancies, the Sharks still have openings in girls’ soccer and girls’ lacrosse.

As final touches are being made to May River’s athletic facilities, Macy is hopeful they can take occupancy Aug. 4. The opening week of football practice will be conducted at River Ridge Academy, as it was in the spring.
