Thomas Heyward ace, 6 others given top honors by High School Sports Report

Thomas Heyward pitcher Selice Daley was named South Carolina’s SCISA Softball Player of the Year and three other area athletes received Player of the Year honors in their classifications this week as High School Sports Report unveiled its spring all-state listings.

Herbert Glaze, who guided Beaufort to its second straight Class 3A girls’ track title and 10th in school history, headed a trio of title-winning coaches also named tops in their divisions. He was joined by Hilton Head Island’s Blake Bishop (3A boys’ track) and Beaufort Academy’s Bill Dalton (SCISA 2A boys’ soccer).

Daley fired four no-hitters during Thomas Heyward’s 29-3 season, allowing just 74 hits in 162  1/3 innings as the Rebels again reached the SCISA 2A championship round. Two of Daley’s three losses came in the final series to Williamsburg Academy.

Hilton Head Prep’s Tyler Fox, who helped power the Dolphins to their first SCISA 2A baseball final, also was named that division’s Player of the Year. In soccer, midfielder Ryan Muniz gave Beaufort Academy a sweep of the top SCISA 2A awards.

Bluffton’s Neil Blanken, who took home discus gold in the Class 4A state track finals and surpassed 170 feet on five occasions, was chosen as the Class 4A Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year.

In all, 38 area athletes were honored by the publication.
