High school sports, May 24: Tate Steinour runner-up in state singles tennis

Hilton Head Island’s Tate Steinour took runner-up honors at last week’s state Class 4A-3A singles tennis championship, knocking off two higher seeds to reach the final before succumbing to two-time champion Chambers Easterling of Spartanburg.

Steinour, seeded sixth in the 32-man event, didn’t lose a set as he advanced through the first four rounds at the Cayce Fitness & Tennis Center. That included wins over third seed Thomas Bryan of Lexington in the quarterfinals and No.2 Jeffrey Dayton of St. James in a rain-plagued semifinal.

The run came to an end in a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Easterling, who sailed through his first three rounds without losing a game before beating Spartanburg teammate Bryce Keim in his semifinal.

Steinour, who also led the Seahawks to the Class 3A Lower State final, is moving on to play collegiately at James Madison.
