Prep roundup for May 17: Hilton Head Prep baseball, Thomas Heyward Academy softball rained out

Both area teams vying for South Carolina Independent School Association state titles will have to wait another day to take to the field.

Hilton Head Prep baseball and Thomas Heyward Academy softball — both winners on the road Monday night — were supposed to host the second games of their best-of-three-games series Tuesday night, but both games were rained out.

Prep has rescheduled its game against Calhoun Academy for 5 p.m. Wednesday at home, according to Dolphins coach Dobbie Green.

Thomas Heyward will host Williamsburg Academy at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Rebels coach Bob Layman.

Prep won the first game of its series 5-0.

Thomas Heyward won its first game 2-1.

Bluffton places 7th: The Bobcats carded a 957 over three rounds to place seventh at the Class 4-A state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Furman University Golf Club in Greenville.

Boiling Springs won the championship with a 904.

Drew Weary carded a 5-over-par 77 in Round 1 to pace Bluffton. Weary, Alec Weary and Brandon McBride all notched 77s in Round 2. In the final round, Drew Weary again led the Bobcats with a 78.

Drew Weary’s total of 232 (16-over) was good for a tie for 14th place in the individual standings. Dorman’s Jordan Warnock cruised to the individual title with a 9-under-par 207, seven strokes better than the closest competitor.

Late Monday Baseball

Hilton Head Prep 5, Calhoun 0: Hilton Head Prep won the opener of the SCISA Class 2A best-of-three state championship series at St. Matthews, as reported by the Orangeburg Times and Democrat.

Tyler Fox struck out 11 and scattered three hits to get the win. Calhoun pitcher Will Spiers (6-3) was nearly as good in six innings of work, striking out 12. But timely hits by HHP produced two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth.

“It was apparent whoever scored first was going to win,” Calhoun coach Bill Spiers said. “Their pitcher was just on. We never could get anything going.”

HHP did not record a hit until the fourth. A single by Gavin Hurlbut and double by E.J. Churchich were followed Reese Irwin’s single that scored two runs.

In the fifth, Gage Hurlbut led off with a double and came home on brother Gavin Hurlbut’s two-out double to make the score 3-0.

HHP’s Fox homered following a Nick Lucchesi walk in the seventh off CA reliever Kyle Gray to push the margin to 5-0.

HHP had six hits in the game.

“They got timely hits and we didn’t,” Spiers said.

For Calhoun, Robert Lewis was 1-3, Caleb Crosby was 1-2 with a walk and Christopher Phillips was 1-3.

The two teams meet again at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hilton Head Prep (23-9). Lewis (6-2) will start for Calhoun (17-7), the defending state champs.
