Thomas Heyward books 3rd consecutive trip to SCISA 2-A softball finals
Morgan Peeples ripped a two-run homer and drove home three runs in all, leading Thomas Heyward Academy back to a third consecutive SCISA 2-A softball championship series with Saturday’s 10-4 victory over Robert E. Lee Academy.
Peeples nearly hit for the cycle, adding a double and single, and Alayna Delong also had three hits and scored twice as the Rebels (28-1) completed a three-game sweep through their bracket at the SCISA tournament in Sumter. They earned a finals rematch against defending champion Williamsburg Academy.
The best-of-3 series will open Monday at Williamsburg Academy, with the Rebels hosting Game 2 on Tuesday. A third game, if needed, would be played Thursday at a neutral site.
Last year’s series went to a third contest, with Williamsburg prevailing after Thomas Heyward won the opener. The Rebels also lost in the finals a year earlier.
Cheyenne Strong and Sydney Glassberg added two RBIs apiece Saturday, as the Rebels overcame an early 2-0 deficit by scoring in every inning. Peeples’ homer in the third put Thomas Heyward ahead 4-2, and the Rebels added two more runs in the fourth to create some cushion.
Selice Daley scattered six hits in her third complete game of the tournament, striking out nine without a walk. She recorded 28 strikeouts over the three games.
Peeples finished the three-game tournament set with seven hits and seven RBIs, while Strong had five hits and five RBIs.
