John Paul II names Kelsey Fink as new volleyball coach
It took a college fair to bring John Paul II Catholic School and its new volleyball coach together.
Kelsey Fink, a Notre Dame graduate, happened to be the school’s representative at a Catholic college fair on the John Paul II campus not too long ago. While keeping up with JP2 news, she ran across a notice that the school was in the market for a volleyball coach.
The onetime assistant at Indiana’s powerful St. Joseph’s High sent in her resume, and on Thursday was introduced as the program’s new leader.
“We were lucky to find her,” said Golden Warriors athletic director Matt Dakolios.
Fink takes over for Sean Custer, who stepped aside at the end of last season following three years of establishing the program.
“Our hope is for (Fink) to just continue on the foundation that’s been built,” Dakolios said. “This will be the first year with seniors at our school, and we’ll have two seniors on the volleyball team. We’ll also be excited for our first season in our own gym.”
A business analyst for a Bluffton healthcare firm, Fink earned both bachelors and masters degrees from Notre Dame. Her studies included a coaching minor, which led her to a St. Joseph’s program that has won three region titles in the past five years.
Fink helped guide the St. Joseph’s junior varsity team to a pair of 20-win seasons before entering the business world.
With the volleyball vacancy filled, John Paul II now is seeking a softball coach to take the program into its first varsity season. Deacon John Crapanzano is retiring this spring after laying the groundwork at the JV level.
