High school sports, May 13: Hilton Head Prep girls ousted in penalty kicks

HiltonHead

Cori Leonard’s first-half goal wasn’t quite enough to propel the Hilton Head Prep girls to the final of the SCISA Class 2-A soccer playoffs, as they came up 3 minutes short of upsetting unbeaten Christian Academy before eventually succumbing on penalty kicks.

The shootout at Beaufort Academy even was forced to go an extra round, tied 4-4, before Christian Academy’s goalkeeper saved Prep’s sixth attempt and the Saints converted to book their place in Saturday’s championship game in Columbia.

“It was an amazing battle between two strong teams,” Dolphins coach Risa McMillan said.

The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation, with the Dolphins spending most of the second half trying to make Leonard’s goal in the 30th minute stand up. Catherine Sheehan sent a corner kick into the box, where Leonard was perfectly positioned to meet it with her foot.

Christian Academy, though, managed to tie it in the 77th minute to send the game to extra time. No one could find the net in that session, nor the 10-minute sudden-death period, sending the contest to penalty kicks.

Oakbrook Prep 4, Hilton Head Christian 0: The Eagles’ quest for a second consecutive SCISA 2-A title was undone by an efficient Oakbrook Prep attack.
