High school sports, May 12: Beaufort Academy back in SCISA boys’ soccer final

Jacob Dalton’s header broke a deadlock right after intermission, the first of two second-half goals Wednesday that lifted Beaufort Academy to a 3-1 victory over Oakbrook Prep and within a step a possible third consecutive SCISA 2-A boys’ soccer crown.

Beaufort Academy will play for the championship Saturday in Columbia, taking on Northwood Academy in a 2:30 p.m. contest at Heathwood Hall.

Dalton put the Eagles ahead for good 3 minutes after the break when he headed home a brilliant cross from Thomas Holladay, with Thomas Roddey also assisting on the goal. Dalton put it away 8 minutes before the final whistle, finishing off an assist from Joe Bhoi.

Goalkeeper David Mathai made five saves for the Eagles, including a trio of crucial stops in the opening half. A Ryan Muniz goal put the Eagles ahead early, only for Oakbrook Prep to counter 2 minutes later.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Hanahan 4, Hilton Head Island 3: Hanahan captured the Class 3-A Lower State title by beating the Seahawks for the third time this year, going to the final doubles match before Chad Nash and Karim Hyatt prevailed over brothers Tate and Cooper Steinour.

Nash punctuated a 6-4, 6-4 victory with an overhead winner off a service return by Tate Steinour. It was the second consecutive meeting where Hanahan was victorious in a deciding doubles match.

Tate Steinour earlier defeated Nash in straight sets at No. 1 singles, while the doubles team of Matt Tobin and Robert Gavin won in a pair of 7-5 sets. Decisive Hanahan wins at Nos. 2-4 singles, though, put the Hawks on the brink of clinching.

Alex Ittenbach sent the encounter to the decisive doubles with a three-set triumph at No. 5 singles, bouncing back from losing a tiebreak in the second set for a 10-7 win in the third.
