High school sports, May 6: Beaufort tennis maintains clean playoff sheet

HiltonHead

Beaufort’s Alex Angus and Jack Louw led a second 6-0 road sweep in as many days in the Class 3-A tennis playoffs, dispatching Darlington on Thursday to book a spot in the Lower State semifinals.

The Eagles will be on the road again Monday, though the trip will be far shorter — traveling to Hilton Head Island for a third meeting against the Seahawks.

Angus recorded his 129th career victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Darlington’s Avery Williamson, and Louw defeated Chris Moore in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-1.

Kam Olin, Merritt Patterson and the doubles team of Jaco Neimond and Chris Hoogenboom also were straight-sets winners. Michael Schwartz was the only Eagle that required a third set, bouncing back from an opening-set loss to emerge victorious 10-7 in the tiebreaker.

Hilton Head Island 4, St. James 2: Cooper Steinour bounced back from an opening-set loss to win a third-set tiebreaker and tip the match in the Seahawks’ favor.

Steinour dropped his first set 6-3 to St. James’ Joseph Martinez, but captured the second set 6-2 and carried the momentum to a 10-6 tiebreaker win.

Tate Steinour, Will Advocaat and Sam Rothwell also scored singles victories for the Seahawks, who have won each of the past two Class 3-A Lower State titles.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Hilton Head Island 5, Wilson 0: The Seahawks did all their scoring in the second half to book passage to the Class 3-A Lower State semifinals for the first time in three years. Next up is North Myrtle Beach at home Saturday evening.
