High school sports, May 3: HH Prep, HHCA set up all-Island tennis final

AP

Marcus Ferreira and Sam Fried followed up identical singles victories with the clinching point in doubles Monday as Hilton Head Prep moved one step from its third consecutive SCISA boys’ tennis crown, taking a 5-2 victory over Spartanburg Day.

The Dolphins advanced to an all-Island showdown Thursday for the Class 2-A title against Hilton Head Christian, which swept Myrtle Beach’s Christian Academy on Monday. Originally scheduled for Sumter, SCISA granted a request from the schools to relocate the match to Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Club starting at 2 p.m.

The Dolphins and Eagles split two previous encounters this season.

Ferreira was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Spartanburg Day’s Matthew Poliakoff, while Fried beat Rollins Turner by the same score. Rodney Sturgis and Evan Hryckiewicz also posted straight-sets singles wins, giving the Dolphins a 4-2 lead heading to doubles in the best-of-9 encounter.

Ferreira and Fried made quick work of Poliakoff and Turner, clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Hilton Head Christian 6, Christian Academy 0: The Eagles didn’t need to go to doubles, gritting out close victories at the bottom of the singles order to book their return to the state final after a one-year absence.

Charles Michael and John Minter wrapped up their victories with 6-4 second sets, while Tate Lucci needed to go to a third-set tiebreaker before emerging with a 10-8 triumph.

Cameron Clark didn’t surrender a game in his No.1 singles victory over Allen Butler, with Alex Likins and Davis Phillips completing the sweep.

BASEBALL

Hilton Head Prep sweeps playoff opener: Tyler Fox, Gavin Hurlbut and Cem Caglayan held Dillon Christian to eight hits over two games, easily sweeping their first-round SCISA Class 2-A doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 16-1.

Fox and Hurlbut combined on a four-hitter in the opener, with Fox also sparking the offense with a solo homer and a double. Caglayan went the distance in the second game, which saw the Dolphins erupt for 10 runs in the first inning.

HHCA splits with Oakbrook Prep: J.D. Monts went 3-for-3 and John Burke pitched a five-hitter as the Eagles rebounded from an opening loss with a 6-2 victory to force a deciding game tonight at Hilton Head Christian.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second, Monts’ RBI double helped the Eagles break things open with three runs in the third. Oakbrook Prep won the opener 5-4, pushing across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Hilton Head 3, Darlington 1: Koty Brigham dashed home on Eric Foggo's one-out grounder in the seventh, breaking a tie and sending the Seahawks through to the Class 3-A District V title game.

Brigham ignited the inning with a bunt single and went to third on Dalton Shaw's double to right. After Tad Zmarzly was intentionally walked, Foggo's grounder put the Seahawks ahead 2-1. Ian Foggo's sacrifice fly added an insurance run.
