High school sports, April 28: Beaufort girls, HHH boys win 3-A region track
Savionna Glover captured three events and Tamara Shields and Bre-Anna Heyward-White won two apiece as Beaufort’s girls easily swept to the Region 8-3A track title Wednesday night, while Hilton Head Island used its strength in distance running to capture the boys’ crown.
Beaufort prevailed in 11 girls’ events in all, including a pair of 1-2-3 sweeps and five others in which the Eagles finished 1-2.
Glover led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 meters, winning in 12.23 seconds, and added titles in the long jump and triple jump. Shields captured both the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, leading a 1-2-3 sweep at the shorter distance.
Heyward-White doubled up with titles in the 200 meters and 400 meters. Beaufort also got wins from Jackie Barnes in the pole vault, Taylor Johnson in the high jump and its 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Hilton Head’s Mallory Liggett also captured two titles, winning both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters, while the Seahawks also won the 4x800 relay.
The Seahawks produced a trio of 1-2-3-4 sweeps on the boys’ side, with Ben Gilman leading the parade in both the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. He also was second in the 800 meters as part of a four-man sweep led by Danny Shaughnessy.
Hilton Head’s boys also got victories from Tyler Hamilton in the long jump, along with its 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Beaufort’s Reggie Jones Jr. won the boys’ pole vault with a clearance of 12-6.
Bluffton claims 5 region titles: Neil Blanken swept the boys’ discus and shot put titles at the Region 8-4A meet, while three Bobcats won their events in the girls’ competition in Summerville.
Blanken, ranked No. 1 in the state in discus this season, unleashed a throw of 169-8 that was just seven inches off his season best. He also was a comfortable winner in the shot put with a toss of 52-0.
Cathryn Roberts won the girls’ pole vault after clearing 10 feet, while freshman Perla Jimenez crossed the line first in the 3,200 meters. Madison Lewellyn was nosed out for the 800 title, beaten by two 100ths of a second, and placed third in the 3,200.
SOFTBALL
Thomas Heyward 15, Dorchester Academy 1: Cheyenne Strong and Selice Daley combined for 18 strikeouts in a two-hitter as the Rebels notched their 21st consecutive victory.
Morgan Peeples came within a triple of hitting for the cycle, with a double and homer among her three hits on the day. Ivy Bryan also had three hits and drove home two runs as Thomas Heyward (24-1) collected 14 hits in all.
Strong pitched the first three innings, giving up both hits but recording all her outs by strikeout. Daley retired all 12 batters she faced, nine by strikeout.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Prep 4, Hilton Head Island 2: Marcus Ferreira rallied to win a third-set tiebreaker that provided the deciding point for the Dolphins.
After dropping the first set 6-3 to Hilton Head Island’s Tate Steinour, Ferreira squared the match with a 6-2 second set and emerged a 10-8 winner in the tiebreaker. Sam Fried, Rodney Sturgis and Frank Lin also won in singles for Prep.
Alex Ittenbach was a singles winner for the Seahawks, along with the doubles team of Robert Gavin and Banks Reddy.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Seahawks place two on All-State: Hilton Head Island’s Colin Courtney and Logan Johnston were named to the boy’s All-State team by the South Carolina High School Lacrosse Coaches Association, while Layton Kirby was a second-team selection.
Courtney was selected as the top long-stick midfielder in the Lower State region, while Johnston was honored as a faceoff specialist. Kirby was among the second-team midfielders.
