High school sports, April 27: Late homer lifts Thomas Heyward in baseball
Conner Driscoll belted a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday, lifting Thomas Heyward Academy to a dramatic 11-10 victory over Hilton Head Prep in an offensive display for both sides.
Spencer Hexamer drew a one-out walk and Anthony Sanders reached on a bunt single before Driscoll ripped a 2-2 pitch to center field to put the Rebels ahead for good. Prep got a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Blake Bannon pitched out of the jam to seal THA’s victory.
Driscoll drove home five runs in all, adding a two-run single in the fourth. Bannon went 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.
Nick Lucchesi led the Dolphins with a 3-for-4 performance, doubling twice and driving home four runs. Reese Irwin contributed a two-run double in the fourth.
Hilton Head Christian sweeps St. Andrews: John Burke collected four hits across the doubleheader and pitched a complete game in the opener to pace the Eagles.
Burke scattered six hits as HHCA captured the first game 7-2, adding two hits of his own and driving home one of the Eagles’ runs. Conner Handy had an RBI double, and J.D. Monts put HHCA ahead for good with a sacrifice fly in the third.
John Blackshire doubled twice and scored four runs as the Eagles won the nightcap 10-4, while Monts produced three hits and scored three times. James Bartholomew drove home three runs with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.
SOFTBALL
Thomas Heyward 1, Battery Creek 0: Selice Daley fired her fourth no-hitter of the season and set the table for the game’s only run as the Rebels notched their 20th consecutive win.
Daley struck out 15 Dolphins batters, giving her 171 for the season, and walked just one. She also led off the third with a single, giving way to pinch runner Bailey Belger, who scored from first when Cheyenne Strong’s bunt led to a throwing error.
Battery Creek’s Alexis Ortiz held the Rebels to just five hits, their lowest total of the season.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Christian 6, Beaufort Academy 0: Cameron Clark, Alex Likins and John Minter scored easy singles wins as HHCA clinched the SCISA Region IV title.
Clark was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Beaufort Academy’s William Lindsay, while Likins and Minter surrendered only one game in their victories. Davis Phillips, Tate Lucci and Charles Michael scored HHCA’s other victories.
Hilton Head Island 4, Beaufort 2: Brothers Tate and Cooper Steinhour led a sweep of the top four singles matches to pace the Seahawks.
Both Steinhours, Will Advocaat and Sam Rothwell all took their matches in straight sets. Beaufort’s Merritt Patterson was a three-set winner in singles, and the Eagles also got a doubles victory from Jaco Neimond and Chris Hoogenboom.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Prep tops Beaufort Academy in PKs: Kate Herman stopped a BA penalty, while Catherine Sheehan, Charlotte Covington and Tori Herman converted spot kicks to keep the Dolphins unbeaten in region play.
The teams tied 1-1 in regulation, as Sheehan scored the equalizer for Prep with 10 minutes remaining. Mary Keane scored a first-half goal for Beaufort Academy.
Hilton Head Island 9, Hanahan 2: Lexi Lainhart and Esther Anderson scored three goals apiece as the Seahawks remained unbeaten in 10 region games.
Arianna Serpe, Kendal Moran and Bailey Headlee completed the Seahawks’ scoring, while Syd Segars picked up the win in goal.
Hilton Head Christian 2, St. Andrews 0: Goalkeeper Sidney Camp shut out the Lions for the second consecutive game, one day after the Eagles claimed a 6-0 victory.
Allison Meeder scored six of the Eagles’ eight goals over the two games. Emily Bailey and Lindsey Gillis added one goal apiece.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 8, Hilton Head Prep 1: Ryan Muniz scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Eagles won for the 13th time in 15 games.
Joe Bhoi and Nathaniel Keenan added two goals each for Beaufort Academy, while Jacob Dalton and Thomas Roddey completed the scoring.
Hilton Head Island 1, Hanahan 0: Goalkeeper Marlon Ascension posted the shutout as the Seahawks clinched the Region 8-3A title.
BOYS’ GOLF
BA’s Stowe places fourth in SCISA final: Joe Stowe of Beaufort Academy used a second-day 79 to claim fourth place among individuals at the SCISA Class 1-A tournament in Conway.
Competing as an invited single, Stowe finished seven shots behind winner Carson Youngblood of Northside Christian.
Seahawks romp in Georgia dual: Charlie Farrell took medalist honors with a second-day 76 as Hilton Head Island completed its two-day dual match against Dawson County. All five Seahawks finished with lower totals than any of their Dawson County counterparts.
TRACK
Battery Creek wins eight region titles: Diamond Smith swept the 100- and 200-meter crowns and Kyanna Milliedge won the triple jump as the Dolphins’ girls placed second in the Region VI-2A championships at Whale Branch.
Smith also took part in a pair of relay wins for the Dolphins, finishing first in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
The Battery Creek boys took third in their meet, as Jonathan Witt captured the 110 hurdles and Tyrone Washington won the 400 hurdles. The Dolphins also hit the tape first in the 4x800 relay.
