High school sports, April 22: Seahawks’ rally falls short in lacrosse playoffs
Duncan Marx scored three goals and Logan Johnston added two, but Hilton Head Island couldn’t come up with an equalizer over the final five minutes in an 8-7 loss to Bishop England that knocked the Seahawks out of the state playoffs.
The contest saw five lead changes and was tied 6-6 before Bishop England went ahead for good midway through the third quarter.
Marx added two assists for the Seahawks (10-4), while Colin Courtney stood tall in defense with 10 groundballs and four takeaways. Johnston won 15 of 16 faceoffs.
SOFTBALL
Thomas Heyward 2, Beaufort 1: Selice Daley gave up one hit over the first five innings and Morgan Peeples homered in the seventh as the Rebels survived their toughest challenge since their 19-game winning streak began.
Daley gave up five hits in all and struck out 13, also going 2-for-2 at the plate and driving home an early Thomas Heyward run. Beaufort’s Mary Claire Sumner kept the Rebels off-balance by scattering seven hits, also breaking up Daley’s no-hit bid with a bunt single in the fourth.
Catherine O’Hara drove home the Eagles’ only run with a two-out single in the seventh, but Beaufort stranded the tying run at second.
Battery Creek 17, Bishop England 1: Alexis Ortiz doubled, tripled and held Bishop England to two hits as the Dolphins completed a cycle in which they beat every region opponent by the 10-run rule.
Journeigh Doray went 3-for-4 with three runs scored as Battery Creek pounded out 13 hits in all. Michaux Gee, McKenzie Young, Emily Madlinger and Kyleigh Peeples all drove in two runs apiece for the Dolphins.
Academic Magnet 10, Whale Branch 1: Shanelle Webb collected two of the Warriors’ three hits as Whale Branch was held in check all afternoon. Victoria Hernandez produced the final hit.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Prep 8, Thomas Heyward 7 (9 inn.): Nick Lucchesi charged home on an error with what turned out to be the winning run as the Dolphins won a thriller.
Lucchesi led off the ninth with a single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home on the misplay. Prep’s Cem Caglayan then set down the Rebels in the ninth, leaving the potential tying run on second.
Reese Irwin blasted a two-run homer for the Dolphins, while Gage Hurlbut also drove home two runs. Thomas Heyward’s Bryce Bannon sent the game to extra innings with a two-run double in the sixth, while Conner Driscoll and Zach Bond had two hits each.
John Paul II 14, Memorial Day 2: Eston Parker cranked out four hits as the Golden Warriors collected 16 hits in all, highlighted by an eight-run third inning.
Thomas Kender and Nate Dardes added three hits each, while Mark Tigges contributed two. Tigges also went the distance on the mound, scattering five Memorial Day hits.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Beaufort Academy 5, Lowcountry Prep 1: James Carden, Mitchell Russell and Jack Staley claimed straight-sets victories as the Eagles wrapped up a win over the defending SCISA Class A champs without playing doubles.
Daniel Richards and Jeffrey Hiestand rounded out the triumph by winning their singles matches in third-set tiebreakers.
Hilton Head Christian 7, Hilton Head Prep 2: Davis Phillips, Tate Lucci, Charles Michael and John Minter swept their singles and doubles matches as the Eagles cruised to victory.
Alex Likins also produced a singles win for HHCA. Prep’s Marcus Ferreira had a hand in both of the Dolphins’ points, winning his singles match and teaming with Justin Perez for a doubles win.
Hanahan 4, Hilton Head Island 3: Tate Steinour and Alex Ittenbach collected singles wins for the Seahawks, with Steinour needing a third-set tiebreak to beat Hanahan’s Chad Nash. The doubles team of Matt Robin and Robert Gavin claimed the other point.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 5, John Paul II 2: Ryan Muniz tallied three goals and John Bhoi scored two as the Eagles claimed their 10th victory in 11 games this season.
Karl Johnson and Josue Hurtado scored for the Golden Warriors, with Hurtado assisting on Johnson’s goal. Sam Villalobos made 14 saves protecting JP2’s goal.
Hilton Head Prep 3, St. Andrews 2: Mac Orie scored twice and Waddy Brooks added another as the Dolphins stormed back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Brooks also assisted on Orie’s winning goal.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Prep 4, St. Andrews 0: Charlotte Covington tallied three goals and Cori Leonard added the fourth as the Dolphins stayed unbeaten in region play.
Catherine Sheehan assisted on two goals and Kaitlyn Atkins had one assist for Prep. Kate Herman and Olivia Mitchell split the shutout in goal.
Beaufort Academy 5, John Paul II 2: Mary Alice Strohmeyer and Amanda Kahn scored two goals apiece for the Eagles, while Mary Keane completed the scoring.
COLLEGE SIGNING
Bobcats’ Ortega heading to Ferrum: Bluffton catcher Tim Ortega has signed a national letter-of-intent to play collegiately at Ferrum College in Virginia.
Ferrum is 28-13 this season and leads the USA South Conference, and now awaits word on a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
