High school sports, April 21: Hilton Head Prep golf rolls in warmup for states
Christian Garruppo, Evan White and J.T. Herman all fired 1-over-par 37s Wednesday in leading Hilton Head Prep to a comfortable victory in a five-way SCISA region match at The Landings in Savannah.
The Dolphins actually had the top four scores of the day, with Aidan McCloskey contributing a 39 to cap off a team score of 150. John Paul II was next at 175, followed by Beaufort Academy and Thomas Heyward.
Alex Thaller posted a 40 to lead the Golden Warriors.
Hilton Head Prep, John Paul II and Hilton Head Christian are headed to the SCISA state tournament that begins Monday in Conway.
Hilton Head Island wins at Berkeley: Caden Edwards paced the Seahawks for the second consecutive day with a 1-under-par 35, helping produce a nine-shot victory at Berkeley Country Club.
Skylar McDaniel added a 36 and Drew Hall posted a 38 for Hilton Head Island, which finished with a team total of 150. Hanahan finished second, with Beaufort another eight shots back.
Matthew Campbell paced the Eagles with a 39.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Christian 16, John Paul II 2: John Blackshire and J.D. Monts drove home three runs each as the Eagles broke free for 11 hits in all.
Dargan Cherry and Blackshire combined on a three-hitter for HHCA, with Cherry picking up the win after giving up two hits and one run in four innings of work.
The Eagles broke things open with eight runs in the fourth, keyed by two-run singles from Andy Ballard and John Burke. Ballard, Burke and Monts each scored three times.
Blake Parsons, Mark Tigges and Nathan Dardes accounted for JP2’s hits.
Summerville 10, Bluffton 0: The Bobcats were held in check by Summerville’s Wilson Beattie, limited to just one hit by the University of South Carolina signee.
Jordan Kennedy produced Bluffton’s lone hit, leading off the fourth with a single.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Beaufort 4, Bishop England 3: Alex Angus recorded his 125th career win for the deciding point, teaming with Jack Louw in doubles for a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory after the teams split their first six matches.
Angus defeated Bishop England’s Lleyton Dacuba in straight sets in singles, and Kam Olin forced the match to the final doubles encounter by winning the final eight points of a third-set tiebreaker after falling behind 7-2.
Doubles specialists Jaco Neimond and Chris Hoogenboom also produced a point for Beaufort.
COLLEGE SIGNING
Seahawks’ Peter headed to Lander: Hilton Head Island’s Andy Peter has signed a national letter-of-intent to play soccer at Lander College.
Peter, a central defender, joins a Bearcats squad that went 14-3-2 last year, placed third in the Peach Belt Conference and lost to Wingate in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
