High school sports, April 19: Seahawks blank Orangeburg-Wilkinson twice
Ian Foggo collected four hits over two games and Hilton Head Island pitching combined to blank Orangeburg-Wilkinson in a doubleheader sweep Monday as area teams returned to action following spring break.
Eric Foggo pitched five no-hit innings as the Seahawks took an 8-0 victory in the opener. Ian Foggo drove home two Hilton Head runs in a 2-for-3 performance.
The Seahawks followed with a 10-0 romp in the second game, as Ian Foggo and Tad Zmarzly each had 2-for-2 outings.
Hilton Head Prep 14, John Paul II 2: Nick Lucchesi drove home two runs and scored four times himself as the Dolphins notched their fourth win in their past five games.
Cem Caglayan and Kyle Adkins also drove home two runs each as the Dolphins pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon. Caglayan also was the winning pitcher, scattering three JP2 hits over four innings with four strikeouts.
Hanahan 14, Beaufort 8: Brice Adkins drove home three runs in a 3-for-4 performance and Michael Smyth also had three hits in a losing effort for the Eagles.
Beaufort wound up with 12 hits in all, with Logan Riley and Drew Luckey also producing two hits apiece.
Hilton Head Christian 11, Bethesda Day 0: Andy Ballard homered and John Blackshire, Michael Graupner and Zach Whitton each produced multi-hit games for the Eagles. Alex Brown picked up the win on the mound.
Battery Creek 12, Whale Branch 2: Mat Caton and Tyler Hoffman each banged out three hits to power the Dolphins, while starting pitcher Kyle Lanning went five strong innings.
SOFTBALL
Thomas Heyward 10, Thomas Sumter 5: Cheyenne Strong and Alayna Delong accounted for nine of the Rebels’ 10 runs as THA extended its winning streak to 18 games.
Strong and Delong each produced three hits and scored twice, with Delong driving home three runs and Strong contributing two RBIs. Hannah Cannon and Ivy Bryan added two hits each as the Rebels finished with 14 hits in all.
Selice Daley pitched a five-hitter for THA, scattering five hits and striking out four.
Hanahan 11, Beaufort 0: Mary Claire Sumner went 1-for-2 as the Eagles struggled to solve Hanahan’s pitching.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Christian 4, Beaufort 3: The doubles team of Cameron Clark and Alex Likins produced HHCA’s winning point in doubles, battling to a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Beaufort’s duo of Alex Angus and Jack Loew.
Likins, Davis Phillips and Charles Michael claimed singles victories for HHCA, with Michael grinding out a 12-10 third set to beat Beaufort’s Merritt Patterson. Angus and Kam Olin were singles winners for Beaufort, tying the match when Jaco Neimond and Chris Hoogenboom took a three-set win in doubles.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Christian 4, John Paul II 2: Three goals in the second half propelled the Eagles to victory, overcoming an eight-save effort by Golden Warriors goalkeeper Sam Villalobos.
Sebastian Zimbron and Karl Johnson produced the JP2 goals, both on assists from Sebastian Laverde.
