High school sports, April 17: Beaufort track sweeps Drug Free Invitational titles
Savionna Glover swept to victory in three individual events and Bre-Anna Heyward-White won two as the Beaufort girls’ track team dominated the field at Saturday’s Drug Free Invitational in Walterboro.
The Eagles also emerged with the boys’ title, though in a far tighter fashion as relay wins in the 4x400 and 4x800 meters lifted them past Colleton County.
Glover won the girls’ long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 11 inches, and also captured titles in the triple jump (36-5) and 100 meters (12.20 seconds). Heyward-White made it a Beaufort sweep of the sprint distances, doubling up in the 200 meters (24.82) and 400 meters (58.71) crowns.
The duo also was part of Beaufort’s winning 4x100 relay, joined by Monique Jones and Jahniya Lynch to post a time of 48.6 seconds. Heyward-White and Jones also propel the Eagles to victory in the 4x400 relay, along with Tamara Shields and Adrienne Brown.
Shields also won the 400 hurdles and Taylor Johnson captured the high jump. As a team, Beaufort’s 206 points nearly equaled the combined total of runner-up Colleton County (123) and third-place Battery Creek (100).
On the boys’ side, Beaufort’s Atlantis Mitchell was named the most valuable track competitor after winning the 400 hurdles and taking part in the Eagles 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Jermaine Byson also was on both winning relays.
Beaufort’s boys had a total of 144 points, with Colleton County next at 137.
