High school sports, April 14: Beaufort uses 2 big innings to beat Prep in baseball

HiltonHead

Jeffrey Smyth drove home two runs with an RBI single and sacrifice fly Wednesday as Beaufort used two big innings to pound out a 9-6 baseball victory over Hilton Head Prep.

Logan Riley had an RBI single ahead of Smyth’s sacrifice fly as part of a five-run first inning for the Eagles, and Smyth’s RBI single keyed a four-run fourth as Beaufort also took advantage of a two-run Prep error.

Smyth and Rome Wallace each had two of Beaufort’s seven hits, and Wallace also picked up the win on the mound by scattering five hits over four innings of work. Kyle Stavac went three innings for the save.

Tyler Fox and Gage Hurlbut had two hits apiece for the Dolphins.

Bluffton splits with Barnwell: Jeffery Hodge doubled home two runs in the first and Sean Sutay’s pitching made it stand up as the Bobcats grabbed a 2-0 victory after losing the opening game of their doubleheader.

Sutay scattered three hits over five innings of work, striking out two and getting nine Barnwell groundouts.

Hodge’s double down the line brought home Grayson Lowe and Toe Jones, who had opened the inning with walks. The Bobcats managed just three more hits the rest of the way.

The Bobcats fell 3-1 in the opener, held to just two hits by Barnwell’s Nathaniel Toole and Seth Pritchard.
