High school sports, April 12: Whale Branch softball falls despite 14-run inning

A 14-run Whale Branch fourth inning turned out to be not quite enough Monday, losing a 20-19 softball decision when Branchville scored five times in the bottom of the seventh.

Whale Branch batted around twice in the fourth, with Jenna Shipley delivering a two-run double and Chyla Simmons and Karen Rivers adding RBI singles. Two other Warriors runs came home on the back end of dropped third strikes.

Shipley finished with four RBIs on the game, while Simmons and Cydney Boggs had three apiece.

BASEBALL

Battery Creek 14, Garrett Tech 0: Matt Caton scattered two hits over five innings of pitching and rapped three hits of his own to lead the Dolphins.

Henry Schubert, Kyle Lanning, Gavin King and Armani Gibbs each added two hits in Battery Creek’s offensive display.

BOYS’ GOLF

John Paul II wins at Crosswinds GC: Andrew Swanson took medalist honors with a 3-over-par 39 as the Golden Warriors finished atop a three-way match with Bible Baptist and St. Andrews.

The Golden Warriors also received news Monday that they have qualified for the SCISA Class A state tournament later this month, coming in their first year as with a golf program.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Andrews 4, John Paul II 1: Goalkeeper Sam Villalobos made nine saves as the Golden Warriors dealt with a strong St. Andrews attack.

JP2’s lone goal was scored by Karl Johnson, with an assist from Sebastian Laverde.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

St. Andrews 3, John Paul II 2: Goals by Caroline Lavery and Renee Delgado weren’t enough to lift the Golden Warriors in a region game. Abby Quinty and Gianna Torinese split time at goalkeeper.
