High school sports, April 9: Seahawks squeeze out boys’ lacrosse victory
Duncan Marx tallied three goals and Jack Flowers added a goal and two assists Friday night as Hilton Head Island jumped out early and held on for a 7-6 boys’ lacrosse victory over Academic Magnet.
Layton Kirby, Winston Torin and Logan Johnston added one goal each for the Seahawks (9-3), while Marx added an assist to his offensive output.
Torin and Colin Courtney led the defense, wtih Courtney gathering 12 groundballs with five takeaways. Torin had six groundballs.
BASEBALL
Beaufort 6, Hilton Head Island 5: Drew Luckey fired a three-hitter and Rome Wallace drove home four runs to propel the Eagles in a region clash.
Cooper Woods drove home two more Beaufort runs, as the Eagles saw three players come up with multiple hits. Connor Clancy went 3-for-4, while Woods and Brice Adkins each had two-hit games.
Valwood 10, Hilton Head Christian 2: Two early runs weren’t enough as the Eagles’ bats went cold with runners on base at the Frederica Invitational.
HHCA finished with eight hits on the day, with Michael Graupner and Andy Ballard collecting two apiece. John Burke and J.D. Monts scored the Eagles’ runs in the top of the first.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Beaufort 2, Berkeley 0: Caroline Coxwell and Sierra Schweitzer scored goals to send the Eagles to victory. Goalkeepers Maddie Brace and Lilly Allen combined on the shutout.
