High school sports, April 8: Bases-loaded walk lifts Whale Branch in softball
Tanasia Campbell drew a bases-loaded walk to push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, lifting Whale Branch to a wild 14-13 softball victory Thursday over Bishop England.
After Bishop England tied the game at 13 with four runs in the top of the seventh, Chyla Simmons was hit by a pitch to start the final sequence. Autumn Moon followed with a one-out walk, and Cydney Boggs drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases.
Campbell then watched four balls go past, allowing Simmons to cross with the winning run.
The Warriors (6-10) took advantage of Bishop England wildness, combining 15 walks with five hits to produce their 14 runs. Nya Simmons scored three times, while Chyla Simmons, Jenna Shipley and Karen Rivers all crossed the plate twice.
Thomas Heyward 13, Colleton Prep 1: Selice Daley drove home four runs with four hits, equaling the number of hits she gave up to Colleton Prep.
Sydney Glassberg and Morgan Peeples added three hits apiece for the Rebels (20-1), with Peeples scoring twice and driving home two runs. Thomas Heyward collected 16 hits in all.
Daley notched eight strikeouts while facing just 19 batters on the day.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Prep 19, John Paul II 7: Gavin Hurlbut drove home four runs in a 10-run second inning as the Dolphins nearly batted around twice in the inning.
Hurlbut started the outburst with a two-run triple, then singled home two more runs to finish off the scoring as Prep moved out to a 13-3 lead.
E.J. Churchich led the Dolphins with three hits and two RBIs, while Aidan Sanz, Michael Santorum and Gage Hurlbut also drove home two runs each.
Hilton Head Christian 9, Presbyterian Christian 5: John Blackshire’s two-run double broke a tie as the Eagles put the game away with four runs in the sixth at the Frederica Invitational.
Blackshire later scored on an outfield error following a J.D. Monts single, and Dargan Cherry’s RBI single capped the inning.
Monts and John Burke led the Eagles with three hits apiece, while Blackshire finished with two hits and three RBIs.
Thomas Heyward 15, Bethesda Academy 0: Bryce Tillotson held Bethesda hitless over three innings and drove home two runs at the plate to propel the Rebels in a Tuesday game.
Tillotson faced just 10 batters on the day, with one hit batter spoiling a perfect effort. The Rebels, meanwhile, took advantage of Bethesda wildness, combining nine walks and six hits to account for their 15 runs.
Beaufort 10, Battery Creek 0: Logan Riley fired a two-hit shutout and Drew Luckey went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Eagles in a six-inning contest Thursday. Brice Adkins and Kyle Torrey added two hits apiece.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Prep 5, Beaufort Academy 3: Two doubles wins propelled the Dolphins to victory after the teams had split six singles matches.
Prep’s duo of Rodney Sturgis and Justin Williams beat Daniel Richards and Mitchell Russell 8-1, and Max Marko combined with Thor Pullon on an 8-3 triumph over BA’s Jeffrey Hiestand and Jack Staley.
Sturgis, Pullon and Justin Perez scored singles wins for Prep; the Eagles got their wins from Richards, Russell and Staley.
Hilton Head Christian 7, St. Andrews 2: Davis Phillips, Tate Lucci and Charles Michael all scored victories in singles and doubles to lead the Eagles.
Phillips didn’t give up a game in a 6-0, 6-0 singles victory over Matthew Hall, while Michael gave up just two games in his win.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Prep 7, John Paul II 0: Waddy Brooks scored three goals and Bryan Allen added two as the Dolphins claimed their sixth win in seven SCISA region games.
Mac Orie and Logan Blair tallied Prep’s remaining goals. JP2 goalkeeper Sam Villalobos recorded 15 saves in a losing effort.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Prep 2, John Paul II 0: Charlotte Covington scored both goals to lift the Dolphins, while goalkeeper Melis Tirhi posted the shutout.
Catherine Sheehan assisted on one of Covington’s goal as Prep remained unbeaten in five region games.
BOYS’ GOLF
Hilton Head Island edges Beaufort by 2: Brooks Dyess and Charlie Farrell each carded 41s as the Seahawks’ depth prevailed at Oyster Reef GC.
Beaufort’s Matthew Campbell took medalist honors with a 38, but no other Eagles golfer could score better than a 43.
