High school sports: April 6: Offensive fireworks propel Whale Branch softball

Tanasia Campbell homered twice and drove home six runs Tuesday, powering a 24-hit Whale Branch attack as the Warriors put on an offensive display in a 19-9 softball romp over Garrett Tech.

Campbell blasted a two-run homer as part of a five-run second inning for Whale Branch (5-9), then added a three-run shot to cap a four-run outburst in the fourth. She finished with four hits, adding an RBI single and scoring three times.

Every Whale Branch batter had at least one hit, with Shanelle Webb and Jenna Shipley each producing three-hit outings. Combined with Campbell and No. 9 hitters Karen Rivers and Trayanna Baker, the bottom four spots in the Warriors’ lineup combined to go 12-for-15 with four runs scored.

Shipley also was dominant as a pitcher, holding Garrett Tech hitless for  3 1/3 innings with six strikeouts before allowing relief to finish up.

Battery Creek 10, Academic Magnet 0: Alexis Ortiz gave up just one hit and struck out 13 of the 18 batters she faced as the Dolphins extended their winning streak to 10 games.

The Dolphins (10-2) took advantage of 10 walks by Academic Magnet pitching, needing just four hits to record their 10 runs. Kyleigh Peeples singled to bring home one run, with other singles coming from Ortiz, Jessica Shipley and Emily Crosby.

Battery Creek, which also stole eight bases, has brought an early end to each of its region games this season.

BASEBALL

Hilton Head Prep 12, St. Andrews 3: Gavin Hurlbut homered on the game’s second pitch and Reese Irwin’s two-run double keyed a four-run second inning for the Dolphins.

Irwin finished with two doubles, leading a 12-hit attack for the Dolphins (11-7). Hurlbut, Aidan Sanz and Ricky Ledee also finished with two hits apiece.

Tyler Fox scattered five hits in pitching a complete game, striking out eight while giving up just two earned runs.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Beaufort Academy 8, Battery Creek 1: A gritty three-set singles victory by Daniel Richards highlighted a dominant afternoon for the Eagles (9-2).

Richards dropped the first set of his match and needed a tiebreaker to win the second, eventually emerging with a 10-7 win in the third-set tiebreak. William Lindsay, James Carden and Jack Staley all swept their singles and doubles matches.

Hilton Head Prep 6, St. Andrews 3: Frank Lin and Justin Perez followed up straight-sets singles victories with another point in doubles to pace the Dolphins.

Max Marko also swept his matches, including a three-set singles triumph after bouncing back from a first-set setback. Rodney Sturgis recorded Prep’s other singles victory.

Beaufort 7, Berkeley 0: Alex Angus, Kam Olin and Taylor McDaniel all swept to singles victories while giving up just one game to their opponents.

Jack Louw and Michael Schwartz also produced singles wins for the Eagles (6-4), with Louw also combining with Angus for a doubles win. Jaco Neimond and Chris Hoogenboom got the final point with a three-set doubles victory.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island 15, Bluffton 0: Chris Valentino came up with 10 saves in a rare shutout as the Seahawks emphatically ended a two-game skid.

Layton Kirby and freshman Jake Rader each scored four goals for the Seahawks (8-3), while Matt Maldonado and Logan Johnston added two apiece. Freshman Cooper Brock added one goal and assisted on three others.

Valentino got able defense help from Colin Courtney, who had 14 groundballs and three takeaways, and Cole Brammer (seven groundballs).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Beaufort Academy 2, Hilton Head Christian 0: Thomas Roddey scored both goals as the Eagles (9-1) remained unbeaten in region competition.

Joe Bhoi assisted on one of Roddey’s goals, while goalkeeper David Mathai was called upon for two saves in recording the shutout.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Hilton Head Island 6, Berkeley 1: The Seahawks spread their scoring out among six different players to remain unbeaten in six region games.

Kendal Moran, Lydia Novak, Bailey Headlee, Lexi Lainhart, Elizabeth McClure and Anna Moreno each tallied a goal for Hilton Head Island (8-4).

Hilton Head Christian 7, Beaufort Academy 4: Allison Needer found the net five times to pace the Eagles to victory. Emily Bailey and Lydia Fuller completed Hilton Head Christian’s scoring with a goal apiece.

Hilton Head Prep 1, Porter Gaud 1: Charlotte Covington scored on an assist from Kirsten Clark for the Dolphins’ only goal, as Prep moved to 4-5-1 on the season.
