High school sports, April 5: John Blackshire’s no-hitter powers HHCA baseball
John Blackshire fired a no-hitter and Michael Graupner’s RBI double helped spark Hilton Head Christian’s eight-run fifth inning as the Eagles pulled away for a 10-0 baseball victory over John Paul II.
Blackshire struck out seven JP2 batters and walked three, twice pitching out of jams after the Golden Warriors got a pair of runners on base.
Graupner, Andy Ballard and James Bartholomew led the Eagles (4-5) at the plate with two hits each, with Bartholomew driving home a run and Ballard contributing a double.
Mark Tigges reached base twice for JP2, also stealing a base.
Bluffton 12, Colleton County 7: Griffin Yeager’s two-run single highlighted an eight-run seventh inning as the Bobcats broke open a close game.
Yeager wound up with two hits and also got the final two outs on the mound, coming on in relief after Colleton County threatened a comeback with five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Tristan Lowe and Henry Holmberg added two hits apiece for the Bobcats (8-4).
Beaufort 8, Berkeley 7: Drew Luckey doubled twice and drove home two runs, while Rome Wallace went 3-for-4 to lead a 14-hit Eagles offensive display.
Logan Riley also drove home two runs with a 2-for-3 performance, while Kyle Torrey and Cooper Woods also produced two hits apiece. Kyle Stavac got the win on the mound, as the beneficiary of Beaufort’s run support.
Battery Creek 6, Murray County 5: Kyle Lanning drove home two runs and Tyler Hoffman went the distance as the Dolphins beat the visitors from Georgia.
Aaron Brantley and Dallas Higuet each went 2-for-4 to spark Battery Creek offensively.
Northwood Academy 8, Thomas Heyward 6: Blake Bannon doubled home a run and later scored himself, but the Rebels (8-7) couldn't make a five-run first inning stand up.
Thomas Heyward produced its five-run first on just two hits, taking advantage of walks and a hit batsman. The Rebels, though, managed just one hit the rest of the way.
SOFTBALL
Beaufort 3, Berkeley 2: Mary Claire Sumner’s bunt single with two out in the bottom of the seventh brought home Lillian Sumner with the Eagles’ winning run.
Lillian Sumner led off the inning with an infield single and was sacrificed to both second and third before charging home on Mary Claire Sumner’s bunt down the third-base line.
The sequence also made a pitching winner of Mary Claire Sumner, who scattered six hits as Berkeley’s only runs came unearned in the third. Savannah Mullen and Krislynn Coolong drove home sixth-inning runs for Beaufort (11-6).
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Island 5, Hilton Head Christian 2: Tate Steinour surrendered only one game as the Seahawks were keyed by four singles wins.
Steinour delivered a 6-0, 6-1 victory over HHCA’s Cameron Clark, while the Seahawks also got straight-sets wins from Alex Ittenbach, Sam Rothwell and Banks Reddy, who needed a 7-5 tiebreaker in the second set to clinch his victory.
Davis Phillips produced the only singles win for the Eagles, later teaming with Clark to win a doubles point over the Seahawks’ Steinour and Will Advocaat.
Beaufort Academy 6, St. Andrews 3: Daniel Richards, Mitchell Russell, Jeffrey Hiestand and Jack Staley all swept to victories in both singles and doubles to lead the Eagles.
All four singles wins came in straight sets, with Russell’s 6-2, 7-5 victory the only one that threatened to go to a third-set tiebreak. The Eagles improved to 8-2 on the season.
