High school sports, April 1: Battery Creek softball notches 9th straight win

McKenzie Young went 3-for-3, stole six bases and scored four times Thursday, while Michaux Gee and Journeigh Doray clubbed back-to-back homers as Battery Creek extended its softball winning streak to nine with a 12-0 romp over Whale Branch.

Alexis Ortiz gave up just two hits over five innings of pitching for the Dolphins (9-2), striking out nine, and added a two-run double at the plate.

Gee and Doray put the game away with their back-to-back clouts in the fifth. Gee belted a two-run shot over the center-field fence, and Doray followed with a solo shot.

Tanasia Campbell and Shanelle Webb produced hits for Whale Branch (4-5), while Campbell also stole three bases.

BASEBALL

North Schuylkill 7, Hilton Head Prep 6 (9 inn.): Chris Burke punched a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Pennsylvania visitors on the final day of the Seahawk Invitational at Hilton Head Island High.

Prep (9-7) had tied the game in the top of the seventh when Tyler Fox doubled home Cem Caglayan, but the Dolphins got no more as they left runners on second and third to end the inning. Another runner was stranded in the top of the ninth.

Fox led the Dolphins with three hits, scoring twice in addition to his tying RBI. Reese Irwin, Kyle Adkins and Nick Lucchesi added two hits apiece.

Hilton Head Christian 4, Thomas Heyward 3: James Bartholomew went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles (4-4), while Connor Handy, J.D. Monts and Dargan Cherry added single hits.

Cherry also picked up the save on the mound, finishing up behind John Burke.

Beaufort 7, Whale Branch 2: Henry Schubert homered and Aaron Brantley drove home two runs to lead the Eagles. Kyle Lanning went the distance on the mound, striking out six.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Hilton Head Prep 5, Hilton Head Christian 4: Justin Perez and Evan Hryckiewicz notched singles victories and teamed up for the deciding doubles point to lead the Dolphins.

After Prep (5-2) captured four of the six singles matches, Perez and Hryckiewicz put the matchup away with an 8-4 doubles triumph over Davis Phillips and Tate Lucci. Marcus Ferreira and Rodney Sturgis claimed the Dolphins’ other singles wins.

Cameron Clark took singles and doubles wins to lead HHCA, teaming with Alex Likins in the doubles. Brent Geist went three sets for the Eagles’ other singles win, prevailing 15-13 in the final tiebreak.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Beaufort 4, Battery Creek 0: Braden Wilson scored twice for the Eagles, while Noah Kimbrell and Will Trumps tallied single goals.

Beaufort (5-5-1) allowed only one Battery Creek shot on target, with goalkeeper Brooks Wilson making the save.
