High school sports, March 30: Seahawks’ depth prevails at Dataw Island golf
Bluffton’s Alec Weary fired a 2-under-par 34 and brother Drew Weary carded a 35, but Hilton Head Island used depth through the lineup to eke out a one-stroke victory over the Bobcats in a three-way golf match at Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike course.
Travis Mancill shot an even-par 36 to lead the Seahawks, which saw no golfer card anything higher than a 39 to finish with a 148 team total. Brooks Dyess and Caden Edwards both had 37s, Meredith Wipper added a 38 and Charlie Farrell shot 39.
Bluffton finished at 149, with Brandon McBride third on the squad with a 38. Tommy Holloway carded a 35 and Max Kase shot 37 for host Beaufort, which finished at 157.
BASEBALL
Beaufort 4, Queen’s Grant 2: Rome Wallace fired a two-hitter and Brice Adkins drove home two runs as the Eagles evened their record at the Hanahan Invitational in Charleston.
Wallace struck out seven in going the distance on the mound. Drew Luckey, Kyle Torrey, Michael Smyth and Cooper Woods also came up with hits for Beaufort.
Pigeon Forge 9, Hilton Head Prep 5: E.J. Churchich went 2-for-2 and Kyle Adkins delivered a two-run single in a losing effort at the Seahawk Invitational, as the Dolphins hurt their cause with six errors.
Just two of Pigeon Forge’s nine runs were earned, with the Tennessee team scoring four unearned runs in the fourth to break the game open.
SOFTBALL
Thomas Heyward 11, Beaufort 1: Sydney Glassberg and Selice Daley drove home three runs apiece as the Rebels rolled to their 14th consecutive win, though Beaufort did end their run of three consecutive shutouts.
Cheyenne Strong added a pair of RBIs for Thomas Heyward (17-1), while Morgan Peeples turned in a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.
Krislynn Coolong led Beaufort with a 2-for-2 batting performance, with Emily Cook scoring the Eagles’ lone run after a fourth-inning double.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Island 5, Beaufort 2: The Seahawks swept all five singles matches, including a pair that went to third-set tiebreakers, to win their region match.
Cooper Steinour bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Beaufort’s Jack Louw 11-9 in the tiebreaker, and Will Advocaat prevailed 10-5 in his third set over Michael Schwartz. Tate Steinour, Alex Ittenbach and Sam Rothwell also won in singles for Hilton Head (8-4).
Beaufort scored its points in doubles, including a three-set win by Chris Hoogenboom and Jaco Neimond. Louw teamed with Alex Angus for the other doubles point.
Beaufort Academy 6, Battery Creek 3: Williams Lindsay and James Carden cruised in singles and teamed up for a doubles win to lead the Eagles.
Lindsay lost just one game in his singles victory, while Carden posted a pair of 6-1 sets. Daniel Richards, Mitchell Russell and Jack Staley also posted singles wins for Beaufort Academy (6-2).
Hilton Head Prep 5, Bluffton 1: Marcus Ferreira and Frank Lin led a singles sweep for the Dolphins, each losing just one game in straight-sets wins.
Sam Fried, Rodney Sturgis and Justin Perez also took singles wins for Prep (4-2). Bluffton’s lone win came from the doubles team of Nace Groshun and Johnathan Welch.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 3, Hilton Head Prep 1: Ryan Muniz scored twice and Thomas Holladay added one as the Eagles won for the fifth time in six outings this season.
David Mathai made four saves in goal, as Prep’s only score came on a Mac Orie penalty kick.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Prep 5, Beaufort Academy 2: Charlotte Covington scored three goals as the Dolphins beat Beaufort Academy for the first time in three years.
Catherine Sheehan tallied the other two goals for Prep (3-4).
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Nations Ford 7, Hilton Head Island 6 (OT): Jack Flowers scored four goals as the Seahawks went to sudden death before suffering just their second loss of the season.
Duncan Marx and Leighton Kirby tallied the Seahawks' remaining goals, each adding an assist, while Colin Courtney led the defense with a season-best 17 groundballs and four takeaways.
