High school sports, March 29: Battery Creek softball extends winning streak

Julianna Greer blasted a two-run homer and Alexis Ortiz also drove home two runs to propel Battery Creek to its seventh consecutive softball victory with a 4-2 triumph over Beaufort.

Greer’s homer capped a three-run second inning that put the Dolphins ahead after Beaufort scored two unearned runs in the first. Ortiz preceded Greer with an RBI single, later driving another run home on a groundout.

Ortiz also pitched a complete game for the Dolphins, scattering six hits with five strikeouts.

Caroline O’Hara led Beaufort with two doubles, while Rebecca Heape drove home both Eagles’ runs with a first-inning single. Mary Claire Sumner gave up just four Battery Creek hits, striking out five.

BASEBALL

Bishop O’Connell 7, Beaufort 3: Rome Wallace doubled twice and drove home two runs for the Eagles in their Hanahan Invitational opener, though they wound up victimized by the Virginia squad’s six-run fourth inning.

Brice Adkins also doubled and drove home Beaufort’s other run, while Jeffrey Smyth and Logan Riley both went 1-for-2 on the afternoon.

York 13, Hilton Head Prep 2: Cem Caglayan drove home both Dolphins runs with a two-run homer as Prep lost its opener at the Seahawk Invitational at Hilton Head Island High.

Ricky Ledee doubled ahead of Caglayan’s fourth-inning blast, while Reese Irwin and Caglayan added doubles of their own. Gavin Hurlbut went 1-for-2 with a walk.

BOYS’ GOLF

Hilton Head Christian wins in Savannah: Danny Azallion fired a 1-under-par 71 and Matt Lehman carded a 73 as the Eagles prevailed in a three-way match over Frederica Academy and Savannah Country Day at Southbridge Golf Club.

Anna Eddy added a 75 for HHCA, which posted a team score of 297 that was 10 shots better than Frederica Academy. Azallion’s 71 shared medalist honors with Frederica’s Gray Johnston.
