High school sports, March 24: Perfect game propels Thomas Heyward past Seahawks

Selice Daley pitched her second perfect game of the season Wednesday and drove home four runs at the plate in leading Thomas Heyward Academy to a 10-0 softball victory over Hilton Head Island that lasted just five innings.

Daley struck out 11 of the 15 Hilton Head batters she faced, needing just 54 pitches to complete the task.

Ivy Bryan doubled twice in a three-hit performance for the Rebels (15-1), driving home three runs, while Liz Bunton added three hits and scored three runs. Sydney Glassberg went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Beaufort sweeps Orangeburg-Wilkinson: Mary Claire Sumner and Emily Cook combined to allow just three Bruins hits over both games of the doubleheader.

Sumner fired a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 14-0 opening shutout, also scoring four of the Eagles’ runs. Cook and Savannah Mullen each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Cook followed with a two-hitter in a 17-2 romp, striking out five along the way. Mullen drove home five runs for Beaufort (10-4), while Rebecca Heape added three RBIs. Krislynn Coolong also had two hits.

Battery Creek 18, Whale Branch 0: Emily Crosby, Kylie Peeples and McKenzie Young homered for the Dolphins (5-2), backing an 11-strikeout pitching performance by Alexis Ortiz.

Ortiz scattered three Whale Branch hits over five innings, also going 2-for-2 at the plate. Crosby went 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two RBIs, while Jessica Shipley also drove home two runs with a 2-for-4 performance.

Young, Michaux Gee, Journeigh Doray and Julianna Greer all added two hits to the Battery Creek attack. Whale Branch’s hits came from Karen Rivers, Autumn Moon and Rikia Singleton.

BASEBALL

Beaufort takes pair from Orangeburg-Wilkinson: Logan Riley drove home three runs in each contest as the Eagles easily swept a doubleheader.

Beaufort took the first game 12-5, with Riley leading the offense with a 2-for-3 performance. Drew Luckey also had a double and triple in a 2-for-4 outing, while Rome Wallace and Brice Adkins added two hits apiece.

Wallace homered in the Eagles’ 10-0 romp in the second game, with Jeffery Smyth and Riley contributing two hits each.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Battery Creek 5, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 0: Gabbi Morales scored for the second consecutive game, while Mesawit Sharew, Kaylan Lanigan and Taylor Corlett provided the Dolphins’ other goals.

The remaining Battery Creek goal was an own-goal off one of the Ridgeland-Hardeeville defenders.
