High school sports, March 23: Beaufort Academy tennis wins state final rematch
James Carden and Daniel Richards led a Beaufort Academy run through the middle and lower singles Tuesday as the Eagles boys’ tennis team knocked off defending SCISA Class 1-A champion Lowcountry Prep 5-4 in a rematch of last year’s final.
Carden took a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 win over Lowcountry Prep's Wilson Grayson at the No. 2 singles, while Richards romped 6-0, 6-0 over Brice Landstreet in the No. 3 match. The Eagles (4-2) also got singles points from Mitchell Russell, Cain Richards and Jeffrey Hiestand.
Hilton Head Island 6, Berkeley 0: Tate Steinour and Sam Rothwell didn’t surrender a game in straight-sets singles victories for the Seahawks, while Cooper Steinour was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the No. 2 slot.
Will Advocaat and Alex Ittenbach also claimed singles victories for Hilton Head Island (7-3), with Robert Gavin and Gabriel Matos prevailing in doubles.
Hilton Head Prep 4, Savannah Day 1: Marcus Ferreira, Sam Fried and Rodney Sturgis each took straight-sets victories in singles to lead the Dolphins (3-2).
Frank Lin and Justin Perez added a doubles victory for Prep, while the tandem of Evan Hrykiweiz and Justin Williams went to a third-set tiebreaker before losing 10-7.
Hanahan 5, Beaufort 1: The doubles team of Chris Hoogenboom and Jaco Neimond produced the only victory for the Eagles. Merritt Patterson came closest to a singles win, falling 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 match.
BOYS’ GOLF
HHCA wins Belfair tournament: Daniel Azallion shot a 1-under-par 35 and three other Hilton Head Christian golfers posted 38s to lead the Eagles past their SCISA rivals in a match that brought the area’s five programs to Belfair CC.
Matt Lehman, R.J. Bartolomucci and Max Green posted 38s as HHCA finished with a team total of 149, nine shots ahead of Hilton Head Prep. John Paul II was a distant third, followed by Beaufort Academy and Thomas Heyward.
Beaufort Academy eighth-grader Joe Stowe nosed out Azallion for medalist honors with a 34. Aidan McCloskey and Walter Campbell led Hilton Head Prep with 38s, and John Paul II got a 39 from Andrew Swanson.
Seahawks take Parris Island: Travis Mancill, Brooks Dyess and Charlie Farrell all shared top honors with even-par 36s as Hilton Head Island pulled away from Beaufort and Battery Creek in a three-way match at the Legends at Parris Island.
Caden Edwards added a 38 as the Seahawks’ team total of 146 was 15 shots ahead of Beaufort, which was led by Tommy Holloway's 38. Battery Creek was a distant third, competing without No. 1 player Porter Mahan.
Bluffton wins in Aiken: Alec Weary posted rounds of 78-75 as the Bobcats emerged one stroke better than South Aiken in a two-day tournament last weekend at Aiken’s Woodside Plantation. Brandon McBride was next for Bluffton with a 159 total, with Drew Weary another stroke back.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Prep 9, Delaware Christian 3: Reese Irwin’s three-run homer capped a seven-run second inning for the Dolphins, backing another strong outing on the mound by Cem Cagalyan.
Cagalyan struck out nine over five innings of work, scattering two hits with one earned run, and also went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and a double. E.J. Churchich doubled with a pair of walks.
SOFTBALL
Whale Branch 16, Garrett Tech 4: Karen Rivers, Chyla Simmons ad Tanaisa Campbell each pounded out two hits in an offensive performance that saw the Warriors strike for 12 runs in the first two innings.
Campbell wound up accounting for six Whale Branch runs, scoring four times and driving home two. Simmons crossed the plate three times.
Jenna Shipley struck out 11 in five innings of pitching for the Warriors, allowing just one hit and one earned run.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Island 5, Hanahan 0: Lydia Novak notched two goals and Sydney Seagars posted the shutout to keep the Seahawks unbeaten in four region games.
Esther Anderson, Bailey Headlee and Jacklyn Couch rounded out the scoring for Hilton Head Island (7-2).
Beaufort 7, Stall 0: Sarah Fanning and Heily Hernandez scored two goals apiece as the Eagles controlled the match. Anna Smith, Sierra Schweizer and Taylor Rabon each added one goal.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort 2, Stall 0: Noah Kimbrell scored in the first half and Jack Gambla added another after the break to lead the Eagles over their region rival. Brooks Wilson came up with nine saves to preserve the shutout.
