High school sports, March 19: Grand slam helps Whale Branch win softball slugfest
Nya Simmons belted a grand slam as part of a six-run fourth inning Friday to power Whale Branch to an early lead in taking a 14-10 victory against Academic Magnet.
Simmons’ blast staked Whale Branch to a 14-5 lead, but the Warriors had to hold on as Academic Magnet kept chipping at the deficit. The Raptors scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, then a steal of home in the seventh provided the final margin.
Shanelle Webb added two RBIs for the Warriors (2-3) and scored twice herself, while Tryanna Baker, Chyla Simmons and Tanasia Campbell also drove home runs.
Beaufort 14, Hilton Head Island 3: Savannah Mullins homered and totaled four RBIs to propel the Eagles.
Bricen Riley and Emily Cook both went 3-for-4 for Beaufort (8-3), while Mary Claire Sumner pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs.
BASEBALL
Hilton Head Island 9, Beaufort 1: Eric Foggo scattered four hits in a complete-game effort to lead the Seahawks.
Troy Clifford belted a grand slam and also doubled to lead Hilton Head at the plate, while Tad Zmarzly doubled among his three hits and Bryce Singleton had two hits.
Whale Branch, John Paul II split DH: John Paul II bounced back from a 3-2 opening loss to gain the doubleheader split with a 9-5 victory, as Blake Parsons picked up the win on the mound.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Beaufort beats Hanahan in PKs: Brooks Wilson stopped two Hanahan spot kicks in a shootout, helping the Eagles emerge victorious after the teams tied 3-3 in regulation.
Wilson also was credited with seven saves for the Eagles (3-4-1), who scored on four of their five shootout attempts. Noah Kimbrell, Jack Gambla and Everett Strmac scored in regulation for Beaufort.
Hilton Head Island 8, Orangeburg-Wilkinson 0: Koben Barrientos and Nick Hoffman scored two goals apiece to lead the Seahawks, while Kevin Palacio added a goal and two assists.
Nathan Plenzler, Jesus Garcia and Garvin Richards rounded out the scoring for Hilton Head Island (4-1-1, 3-0 region). Goalkeepers Andrew Rico and Jorge Castro split time in recording the shutout.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Beaufort Academy 4, King’s Academy 2: Alison Alvarez scored twice as the Eagles remained unbeaten through four games. Mary Alice Strohmeyer and Mary Keane produced BA’s other two goals.
BOYS’ LACROSSE
Hilton Head Island 19, Waccamaw 2: Duncan Marx amassed five goals and two assists as the Seahawks dominated from the outset.
Taylor Rozek added four goals and two assists, while Jack Flowers had two goals in helping Hilton Head to a 14-1 lead at halftime. Colin Courtner, Matt Maldonado, Layton Kirby, Logan Johnston, Benton Soule, Jake Rader, Jeff Gordon and Billy Christie rounded out the scoring
boys’ GOLF
Hilton Head Prep wins at Penny Branch: Walker Campbell, Aidan McCloskey and Christian Garruppo all carded par or better as the Dolphins made easy work of their dual match against Patrick Henry.
Campbell carded a 2-under-par 34, as Prep compiled a team score of 1-over 145. McCloskey was a shot behind Campbell’s pace, with Garruppo another stroke behind. Patrick Henry posted a team score of 177.
