High school sports, March 18: John Paul II boys soccer wins 2nd straight

Sebastian Zimbron and Josue Hurtado scored two goals apiece in leading John Paul II to their second consecutive boys’ soccer victory, beating Coastal Christian 5-2.

Karl Johnson added a goal and an assist for the Golden Warriors (2-5), who have scored 15 goals in their past two games. Sebastian Laverde tallied two assists, while Tyler Klein and Colin Byrne each had one assist.

Sam Villalobos and Craig Balerna combined for four saves as they split time in the JP2 goal.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Coastal Christian 2, John Paul II 0: Gianna Torinese made five saves in her first start in goal, but the Golden Warriors couldn’t generate enough scoring chances to offset the Cougars’ goals.

boys’ GOLF

John Paul II wins 2nd straight: Alex Thaller carded a 3-over-par 39 to take medalist honors for a second consecutive day as the Golden Warriors defeated Patrick Henry in a dual match at Penny Branch Golf Club in Furman.

JP2 finished with a team score of 178, four shots ahead of Patrick Henry. The Golden Warriors have won two straight dual matches after placing second in a pair of multi-team tournaments to open the season.

boys’ TENNIS

Beaufort 7, Berkeley 0: Alex Angus reached the 120-victory plateau for the Eagles, winning his singles match and combining with Jack Louw in doubles as Beaufort made quick work of the Stags.

Louw also recorded two wins, while Michael Schwartz, Kam Olin and Merrett Patterson added singles victories. Olin and Patterson claimed 6-0, 6-0 wins, as did the doubles team of Chris Joogenboom and Jaco Neimond.
