High school sports, March 17: Beaufort powers way to softball sweep
Emily Cook, Rebekah Heape and Savannah Mullen combined to drive in 13 runs Wednesday as Beaufort made quick work of sweeping a softball doubleheader from Stall.
The Eagles (7-3) cruised in the first game 18-0, as Cook drove home four runs and struck out eight Stall batters on the way to a complete-game shutout. Bricen Riley and Kidron Martin added three RBIs apiece, while Mullen and Krislynn Coolong each had two RBIs.
The second game resulted in an 18-1 Beaufort victory that lasted just three innings. Heape drove home four runs, while Lillian Sumner had three RBIs and Mullen two.
Thomas Heyward 21, Orangeburg Prep 0: Morgan Peeples’ three-run homer highlighted a 12-run fifth inning as the Rebels dominated both at the plate and in the circle.
Cheyenne Strong and Selice Daley combined on a Rebels no-hitter, with Strong striking out 11 in four innings of work. Daley struck out the side in the ninth.
Daley, Strong and Sydney Glassberg each recorded three hits for Thomas Heyward (10-1).
Whale Branch 10, Bishop England 5: Nya Simmons went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Jenna Shipley scattered five hits in a complete game as the Warriors claimed their first victory of the season.
Shipley and Shanelle Webb also drove home two runs each, with Shipley two-run double in the second putting Whale Branch (1-3) in front for good.
BASEBALL
Beaufort 16, Stall 6: Logan Riley drove home five runs with a pair of triples as the Eagles cruised in a game that lasted just five innings.
Connor Clancy, Cooper Woods and Rome Wallace also had two hits apiece for Beaufort (8-4).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Island 3, Beaufort 1: Esther Anderson scored two goals and Lexi Lainhart tallied the other as the Seahawks won a Tuesday contest.
boys’ GOLF
John Paul II takes first win: Alex Thaller carded a 5-over-par 41 to take medalist honors as the Golden Warriors beat Bible Baptist for the program’s inaugural victory.
JPII finished with a team score of 180, with Bible Baptist scoring 204. Wednesday’s victory came after the Golden Warriors, in their first season, placed second in a pair of multi-team tournaments earlier this month.
