High school sports, March 16: Bluffton trio beats par at Parris Island in win

Drew Weary fired a 4-under-par 32 to lead three Bluffton golfers under par Tuesday as the Bobcats captured a three-way golf match with Hilton Head Island and Beaufort at the Legends at Parris Island course.

Alec Weary posted a 33 and Brandon McBride added a 35 for the Bobcats, whose team total of 4-under 140 was five shots better than Hilton Head Island. Beaufort finished another five shots back.

Travis Mancill carded a 34 to lead Hilton Head Island, with Brooks Dyess next at 36 and Charlie Farrell adding a 37. Tommy Holloway led Beaufort with a 37.

boys’ TENNIS

Beaufort 5, Bluffton 1: Alex Angus, Michael Schwartz, Kam Olin and Merritt Patterson each swept to straight-sets singles wins to propel the Eagles (4-2) to victory.

Angus didn’t surrender a game in a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Bluffton’s Alex Hanh. The Beaufort duo of Chris Hoogenboom and Jaco Neimond also prevailed in doubles, bouncing back from losing a second-set tiebreaker to win the third set 10-6.

Hanahan 4, Hilton Head Island 2: Tate Steinour recorded the only singles victory as the Seahawks were dealt just their second loss of the season.

Steinour posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hanahan’s Chad Nash, while the doubles tandem of Matt Tobin and Robert Gavin posted a straight-sets win for the Seahawks (5-2).

BOYS’ SOCCER

John Paul II 10, Bible Baptist 0: Noah Brock scored twice and eight teammates notched a goal apiece as the Golden Warriors broke through in a big way for their first win of the season.

Josue Hurtado and Elijah Moreno each had a goal and two assists, while Karl Johnson had a goal and an assist. Sebastian Zimbron, Tyler Klein, Hunter Burton, Jalen Mutrie and Alex Thaller rounded out the JPII scoring.

Sam Villalobos and Craig Balerma combined to keep a clean sheet in goal for the Warriors (1-5).

BASEBALL

Hilton Head Prep 9, Bethesda 1: Andrew Moody and Ricky Ledee drove hom three runs apiece to power the Dolphins.

Moody went 2-for-2 with a stolen base, while Ledee had a bases-clearing triple for Prep (5-2). Reese Irwin struck out five in two hitless innings of pitching.
