High school sports, March 15: Big inning propels Thomas Heyward
Anthony Sanders pounded out four hits and Zach Bond drove home two runs with a fifth-inning single Monday as Thomas Heyward Academy pulled away to a 6-1 victory over Hilton Head Christian.
The Rebels led just 1-0 through four innings before breaking things open with four runs in the fifth. A wild pitch by HHCA’s John Blackshire scored Conner Driscoll and Bond followed with his two-run single to extend the lead further.
Driscoll and Harrison Wall added two hits apiece for the Rebels, while Blake Bannon scattered two HHCA hits and struck out nine in six innings of work. J.D. Monts produced both of the Eagles’ hits, including an RBI double in the sixth.
John Paul II 13, Bethesda Academy 2: Thomas Kender scattered three hits over five innings, striking out nine, as the Golden Warriors evened their record at 5-5.
Jack Jolley led JPII at the plate with a 5-for-5 performance, while Kender added three hits. The Golden Warriors combined for 13 hits in all.
GOLF
Hilton Head Christian wins at Sea Island: Matt Lehman and Danny Azzalion each posted 2-over-par 74s to lead the Eagles to victory in the Frederica Academy Invitational at Sea Island, Ga.
HHCA’s team score of 303 tied host Frederica Academy for first, but the Eagles claimed the crown when the fifth players’ scores were used as a tiebreaker. R.J. Bartolomucci and Anna Eddy had matching 78s to share fourth for HHCA, while Frederica’s fifth score was an 85.
J.D. Patterson’s 77 placed third among the Eagles.
Hilton Head Prep tops Savannah match: Walker Campbell fired a 1-over-par 37 and Christian Garruppo posted a 39 as Hilton Head Prep finished atop a three-team match at Savannah’s Southbridge Golf Club.
The Dolphins combined for a 162 team score, 20 strokes ahead of John Paul II. Alex Thaller paced the Golden Warriors with a 42.
Thomas Heyward placed third; host Bible Baptist didn’t field enough players to qualify for the team competition.
SOFTBALL
Berkeley 12, Beaufort 9: Lillian Sumner cranked out three hits and Krislynn Coolong and Mary Claire Sumner added two apiece, but the Eagles could not overcome defensive mistakes against Berkeley.
Mary Claire Sumner gave up only one earned run while pitching a complete game for the Eagles (5-3).
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Hilton Head Island 1, Bluffton 0: Esther Anderson scored the game’s only goal and Sydney Seagers posted the shutout to lead the Seahawks.
