High school sports, March 13: Selice Daley no-hitter gives Rebels tournament title

Selice Daley struck out 12 on the way to her second no-hitter of the weekend, propelling Thomas Heyward Academy to a second consecutive SCISA Preseason softball tournament crown Saturday with a 5-0 romp over Thomas Sumter.

Hannah Cannon ripped a two-run triple in the first inning to give the Rebels all the scoring they would need, as Daley allowed only just three batted balls into play. She walked two and hit a batter, creating the Generals' only runners.

Daley also combined with Cheyenne Strong on a perfect game as THA thumped Byrnes 7-0 in the tournament's second game.

"Selice was spot-on this weekend," Rebels coach Bob Layman said, "but honestly we got great play from the entire team. I'm pleased at where we are right now, but we have to keep the intensity going."

The Rebels (9-1) also beat Thomas Sumter 3-1 earlier to send the Generals into the losers' bracket, as Sydney Glassberg's two-run double in the bottom of the final inning broke a deadlock.

Glassberg, who hurried to the softball fields after playing for the SCISA All-Star basketball squad against their Georgia counterparts, scored three runs in the finals. Daley contributed two of the Rebels' five hits, driving in a run and scoring once.

The Rebels scored 20 runs during the tournament, while giving up just one.
