High school sports, March 10: HHCA duo teams up for 5-inning no-hitter
John Burke and J.D. Monts combined on a no-hitter Wednesday as Hilton Head Christian’s baseball team rolled to a 12-0 victory over Memorial Day in a game called after five innings.
Burke struck out nine Memorial Day batters and walked four in four innings of work, with only three Matadors managing to put the ball in play. Burke pitched the final inning, striking out one and getting two groundouts.
Monts also had a role in five of HHCA’s 12 runs, scoring three times and driving in two with an RBI single and RBI double. Andy Ballard drove home three with a single and sacrifice fly.
Battery Creek 7, Hilton Head Prep 3: Battery Creek handed Prep its first loss of the season, finding its rhythm against Kyle Adkins’ pitching.
Adkins did strike out eight in four innings of work for Prep, while contributing two hits at the plate. E.J. Churchich added a two-run homer for Prep.
SOFTBALL
Bluffton 7, Beaufort 4: Taylor Gleason rapped out four hits and pitched a complete game as the Bobcats won at home. Mary Claire Sumner and Lillian Sumner each went 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles (4-2).
boys’ TENNIS
Hilton Head Island 4, Bishop England 2: Tate Steinour, Cooper Steinour and Sam Rothwell won singles matches to pace the Seahawks.
Cooper Steinour won a third-set tiebreaker 10-8 to prevail in his match over Bishop England’s Brian Privett. Matt Tobin and Robert Gavia were doubles winners for the Seahawks.

Seahawks 22nd in MaxPreps Cup: Hilton Head Island leads the state and ranks No. 22 nationally in MaxPreps’ all-sports points race, fueled by state championships in volleyball and a sweep of the cross-country titles.
The MaxPreps Cup is determined by ranking all schools that win a state championship or finish runner-up in their classification. Points are weighted for enrollment and overall number of schools in a state.
The standings, unveiled this week, currently take into account only the fall season.
