High school sports, March 9: Beaufort tennis defeats Hilton Head Christian

Alex Angus swept to wins in both singles and doubles as Beaufort tennis team defeated Hilton Head Christian 6-1 Tuesday in a dual match.

Michael Schwartz, Kam Olin and Merritt Patterson also notched singles wins for Beaufort, while Angus and Jack Louw teamed up for a doubles win. Chris Hoogenboom and Jaco Neimond also won in doubles.

Beaufort’s victory came after the Eagles placed eighth at last weekend’s Florence Invitational, one of the toughest prep tournaments in the Southeast.

Davis Phillips scored HHCA’s lone win in singles.

Beaufort Academy 6, St. Andrews 3: The Eagles showed their depth, getting all their points from the middle and back parts of the lineup.

Daniel Richards, Mitchell Russell, Larry Lindsey and Jeffrey Hiestand all prevailed in their singles matches, then teamed up for doubles wins.

GOLF

Hilton Head Island wins at Golden Bear: Brooks Dyess fired a 1-under-par 35 and Meredith Wipper carded 36 as the Seahawks prevailed in a four-way match with Hilton Head Christian, Hilton Head Prep and Bluffton.

Hilton Head finished with a team score of 2-over 146, four shots ahead of Hilton Head Christian.

HHCA’s Daniel Azallion also shot a 35 to share medalist honors with Dyess. Alex Weary (38) led Bluffton and Aidan McCloskey (39) took low honors for Hilton Head Prep.

BASEBALL

Hilton Head Christian 16, Bethesda Adademy 0 (3 innings): John Blackshire drove home five runs and got the win on the mound in a game that lasted only three innings before the 15-run rule went into effect.

Blackshire retired all nine Bethesda batters he faced, striking out seven. James Barthomomew and Dargan Cherry added three RBIs apiece for the Eagles.

SOFTBALL

Thomas Heyward 9, Bluffton 1: Selice Daley drove home three runs and struck out nine Bluffton batters as the Rebels spoiled Bluffton’s home opener.

Sydney Glassberg went 2-for-2 and scored four THA runs, while Liz Bunton also had two hits and drove in two runs. Kylie Gleason and Jordan Parker each had two hits for the Bobcats.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island 16, Bluffton 4: Layton Kirby and Logan Johnston scored four goals apiece as the Seahawks (4-1) controlled play from the outset.

Jack Flowers added three goals and two assists for Hilton Head, while Duncan Marx assisted on five goals while tallying two of his own. Colin Courtney continued his stellar defense by forcing 12 ground balls. Bluffton dropped to 1-4 on the season.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island 13, Ashley Hall 11: Katy Bautista scored nine goals and Lauren Reed added two goals as the Seahawks (2-2) held off the visitors.

Morgan Moran and Ella Patrick also scored for Hilton Head, while Rainy Rosas made 12 saves in goal.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Hilton Head Island 5, Bluffton 1: Bailey Headlee scored three goals and Lexie Lainhart and Esther Anderson added one apiece to propel the Seahawks.

St. Andrews 4, John Paul II 1: Caroline Lavery scored the lone goal as the Golden Warriors lost their second straight to start the season. Katie Floyd assisted on the goal.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Andrews 2, John Paul II 0: Despite 13 saves from goalkeeper Sam Villalobos, the Golden Warriors could not generate any scoring of their own in falling to 0-3 on the season.
